Aspire to Lead

There has always been a buzz surrounding the role and contribution of women in the corporate world. In most parts of the world, it is felt that women can't achieve professional success and climb the ladder without sacrificing on the home front. In recent times, this was also indicated by top corporate women in various ways. However, the discussion should not be about choosing between home and work. Rather, it should focus on encouraging women—by family, peers, and society at large—to aspire to lead. It is also true that whether they achieve success or not depends on their attitude towards life and the priorities they set individually.

Women in the HR Profession

Specifically, when we talk about women in the HR profession, it is perceived globally as a profession meant for females. Many studies have revealed that women outnumber men in this field. In India too, women prefer HR over other functions, possibly because the nature of the work suits their inherent qualities and temperament. It is true that HR requires empathy, a skill women often possess more naturally. However, to reach the top, one needs to blend empathy with business knowledge and be tech-savvy in present times.

There are many women in corporate India who have reached the top to head the HR function and proved their mettle. Particularly when the function is seen more as tactical than strategic by peers in the organization, women struggle more for visibility. Those who have demonstrated their people and business skills, driving the business to success, enjoy a seat at the center.

Celebrating Women HR Leaders

To know more about women HR leaders in the country and how they achieved their current positions, commanding respect, dignity, and followers in organizations, Business Manager, after much deliberation, concluded with a few women HR professionals who have written their own destinies against all odds. Appearing in the anniversary issue are Niharika Mohan, Tanvi Choksi, Saagarika Ghoshal, Namrata Gill Tyagi, Nirmala Behera Udgata, Divya Jain, and Suma Poduval.

There is one common factor in the success stories of these HR leaders: their honesty and hard work towards their jobs—whether at home or in the office—with excellent balancing skills between family and work expectations. Passion for what drives you is the core of success for all of them.

The journey of learning for these women HR leaders is still ongoing, as is ours. Business Manager has entered its 19th year of continuous publication, fighting against all odds.
