Hello seniors,

To what type of job is notice period strictly applicable? Why do companies ask for a 2-week or 1-month notice period and under what circumstances?

If a person is doing a day-to-day job (which can be completed in 1 or 2 days) and doesn't have to hand over anything to a colleague, would the 2-week notice period still apply?

From my personal experience, when an employee is forced to stay the notice period, they neither perform their duties wholeheartedly nor do they lift the spirits of their co-workers. They often complain about the current situation and praise the new company they are about to join.

Please note that this is not a position where the company has invested significantly in training or development. So, what is the necessity for strict adherence to the notice period when the employee is willing to pay and leave?

Kindly share your views, advice, or comments on this significant issue.

Thanks & Regards,

Hi Karthy,

I fully agree with your point. Employees lose interest in the job they do. But in my opinion, why companies follow this procedure is that they want to give the option to the employee of replacing somebody before he/she leaves. Or at least, they could have a breathing time of finding someone in the next 15-30 days, so that the project is not affected much.

Thanks,

Hi,

Company is investing (both time and money) on every employee. Generally Company should have a policy how many days should allocate for the notice period. This should state in the appointment letter of employee.

We are in to soft ware development. In our organization employee who is willing to resign has to give 90 days as a notice period. How ever in certain circumstances we provide them different notice period.

Examples

1. If a person who works his own and we assume he is working on a big project where it will take him/her to finish 5-6 months or more. At this case the person should give 90 days notice.

2. If he working for a team then he can request different period lesser than 90 days. How ever it decides by the management.

If some one is working on small scales of a project then he has to complete the job at the resigning date. He/she can resign only after completion of the current project.

Reason for notice period:

This is because if Employer replaces a new person for job. It will take some times him to understand the project and also as you know recruitments is a long process and cannot get person within shorter period time.

It's better to keep one policy applicable for all. So it’s convenient to the company point of view.

Hi,

Usually, a notice period is required for the company to find a replacement so that their work is not hampered or stopped in any way. After all, the company has invested time, knowledge, experience, and money in that employee, whatever their designation may be. In the manufacturing industry, mostly it is one month for managers and more than one month for AGM/GM, etc. The reason being they are in a highly responsible position. However, there is no universal policy with respect to the amount of the notice period. In some companies, their leave is adjusted against their notice period. However, this varies from company to company.

With warm regards,

Dear Karthy,

Your first question is “To what type of job is notice period strictly applicable?”. The notice period depends from organization to organization. For e.g small org usually have a 1 week to 15 days notice period.Mid sized organization have 1 month notice period and the Big organizations have 3 months period. Then it may vary from industry to industry as well.Apart from this some organizations have different notice period for the different levels. For e.g. the junior level may have lesser notice period then the senior levels. Now lets be more specific. Actually truly the notice period is strictly applicable/required for the critical positions where you are not in a position to relieve the person with the immediate effect as it may drastically affect the work handled by him.

In my opinion the terms and conditions of the appointment letter should specifically include the Notice period which is a general trend followed by all the professionally managed orgs. Then depending upon the circumstances and the criticality of the position, one can be relieved earlier then the notice period.

If you feel that relieving the person at an earlier date would not affect the working in that particular department then that can be practiced otherwise viceversa. One can’t be very rigid with the notice period part.

Hope your queries are answered.
