A convention of 11 Central Trade Unions (CTUs) has declared a nationwide strike on September 2 that will cover public and private sectors, including banking and railways. The strike call is against the labor policy of the Union Government.
May I know how it is being perceived in Tamil Nadu? Do we need to declare a holiday?

Trade Unions play a vital role in the economic endeavors of a nation, serving not only as an institutionalized bridge between the partners of production but also as vocal protestors against the ultimate patron of the Welfare State, namely the Government, when their industry and labor policies are perceived to be detrimental to the growth of domestic industries and labor in the long run.
To draw the attention of the Government and as a mark of consolidated protest, it is quite common and universal for a nationwide token strike to be called by the Central Trade Unions. The general perception is that although such a token strike is legal, as the formalities of notice, etc., as per the provisions of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, are observed by the affiliated unions, it is still a unilateral breach of the employment contract on the part of the workmen, attracting the principle of "No work - No wages." If you declare a holiday, aside from being a gesture of your support to their cause, it will ensure holiday wages for the day of the strike.
