I want your valuable guidelines on my new joining. For the last 14 years, I have been working with a private company. Now, I have a new job opportunity in a reputed company with the designation of Manager HR, IR Plant Level. In my opinion, I am quite comfortable with that position, but I am a little bit worried about the working culture. What precautions should I take to ensure success? How should I start working? Please guide me.

Regards

Dear Milind,

In IR and especially in Plant HR, workers expect a lot from the senior HR person. Therefore, to maintain positivity in your role, you should start building confidence among them and help in cultivating a good culture.

Additionally, focus on the availability of basic infrastructure meant for them, which is often missing. Many times, the workers' voices go unheard. You should listen to them, take action, and if necessary, consult or convey their concerns to management with a positive approach. If the organization has a trade union, it is essential to remain vigilant at all times. It goes without saying that you should establish good relationships with union leaders and members as well.

Above all, strictly comply with the provisions of the Indian Factories Act, 1948. Trust me, if you start adhering to this Act, half of the confidence in your workers will be built as people seldom do so.

Also, spend significant time on the floor to understand the ground realities.

Warm regards,

Umesh Chaudhary
