Work Hours in Indian Technology Startups
What is the number of daily and weekly hours of work in small companies and technology/software/internet startups in India? I have met employees working in such companies in Indian cities like Delhi and Mumbai, who say that their typical workday is 10-12 hours, 6 days a week. Online documents of Indian labor law for shops and establishments state that the maximum hours are 48 in one week.

Is the number of working hours for employees of technology/software startups different? Has the Government of India allowed more hours for small technology internet startups and SMEs in India? If not, then what can employees of such companies legally do?

No, the law is the same for everyone; there is no exception for spread over and working hours. Companies that are violating the overtime provisions of the Shop Act or have working hours beyond 48 hours a week are violating the provisions, which is illegal. The additional hours should not exceed 6 hours a week. The spread over is also prescribed as not more than 11 hours a day.
