Is it laid out in an act/law that working hours should not exceed 8 hours a day? If so, would you be able to refer to the act which prescribes it?

Please treat this query in respect of the Airline Industry.

Your inputs are sought.

Hi Sherine,

Ya, it is in the Factories and Wages Act. I don't remember the year or many details. We had it in our 1st semester. I'm sure you'll get information about this law on Google. There were no exceptions to the airline industry, so I guess it's included.

All the best.

It should be exclusive of lunch hours. That's how you will find the normal office hours are 10:00 am to 6:30 pm.

Anyways, these days normal working hours are "minimum" 8 hours, with no maximum limits.

Hello HR Friends,

Can someone please advise on the following question? Does the India Labour Law disallow having different work timings for different departments of the same legal entity? For example, in an organization, the Commercial department works 5 days for 9 hours per day, BUT the Operations department works for 6 days for 8 hours per day. Can this be written in the Service Condition Manual?

Thanking you in anticipation!!

Regards,
Sarika

Dear Sherine,

You would be governed by the "Shops and Establishments of Karnataka," which specifies the total working hours as 8 hours in the working hours section of the Act. Any overtime exceeding 8 hours calls for double the rate of salary. Additionally, there are specific provisions for women to work between 9 pm to 9 am.
