Understanding Employee Motivation

Underlying one's behavior or attitude towards work, there are always hidden values and motives. These values and motives are the "drivers" that motivate one to achieve something. Try to find out what he needs most.

Competency and Its Role in Motivation

This has to do with competency as well. Competency is the combination of learned skills, knowledge, and behavior/attitude that are required to get the job done. One may have the skills and knowledge but may not exhibit the required behavior to do the job. This relates to his intention.

Starting with Job Descriptions

Start with the job description first, which outlines the required competencies. Select those who demonstrate such competencies during the interview. Understand why they like to work in the company.

A manager is supposed to motivate the staff working under him or her. However, if a manager requires motivation, then that person is not truly a manager. Managers are supposed to be self-motivated. A manager who requires motivation or external factors to generate interest in the work probably has not understood what management entails.

Managerial Responsibilities

The manager should devise departmental goals based on the organizational goals. This responsibility falls on the respective manager. The General Manager may provide some assistance, but 80% to 90% of the groundwork needs to be done by the manager. The GM may assist in corrections.

Onboarding New Entrants

Onboarding new entrants is part of the manager's responsibilities. Have you prepared a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for this? The manager should follow the SOP.

It would be helpful if you could clarify your requirements and the purpose of this exercise. Are you a student or a working professional?

Could you be kind enough to let us know to what extent your manager is motivated by his superior? I hope his superior has a complete overview of his operational strategies and working style. Does your manager have a good interpersonal relationship with his team members? If yes, I am sure there are bright chances for him to get motivated through his team members as well.

Also, please let us know more about yourself and provide us with additional insights supporting your query.

With profound regards,

In your query, the Manager is in charge of a few Sectional Heads and further employees below them. How to motivate the Managers or sectional heads requires clarity.

Hierarchy and Responsibilities

The duty of the Manager is to get the work done through their Sectional Heads, and the sectional heads will assign the work to the workmen below. This is the hierarchy in any organization.

Importance of Motivation

Motivation is necessary for the new entrants or semi-skilled workmen. The Sectional Head is elevated to his position with his skill and through his hard work with perfection and must have command over his workmen. A Sectional Head or divisional head will be treated as skilled staff. The Manager is one who is experienced in the trade, commands well over his subordinates, and guides them in the right direction wherever required.

Role of the Manager

The Manager should be a good administrator to get things done through his section heads within the timeframe with perfection in the work and less wastage. Any problems with the semi-skilled workmen that cannot be tackled by their section heads, the Manager's duty is to sort out, provide them with a suitable solution, put them on the right track, and give moral support for the smooth flow of work.

The immediate superior is the best judge to ascertain the capacity of subordinates. As a manager, you are the best judge for your subordinates (section heads). The section heads are the best judges for their subordinates. It is essential for all to sit together and determine who the best and most skilled individuals are.
