Dear Saraswathi Gopakumar,
I would like to inquire about the overtime hours per month and quarter in Tamil Nadu. There seems to be a discrepancy in the information provided by social auditors, with varying figures such as 60 hours, 70 hours, etc., being reported. Could you please clarify the exact number of hours for overtime? I would appreciate a prompt response.
Regards,
SIR

Dear Saraswathi,
As per the Factories Act 1948 and the Tamil Nadu Factories Rules 1950, no adult worker shall be required to work in a factory for more than 48 hours in a week or more than 9 hours in a day.
An application shall be made at least 15 days prior to the engagement of workers for overtime work. Exemptions will be granted after scrutiny and perusal of the documents. Exemptions will be granted for a quarter at a time, starting with January, April, July, and October.
The exemption granted restricts the overtime hours to 75 hours in a quarter per quarter, in addition to other conditions mentioned in the exemption order.
Please note that the Act prohibits the granting of overtime exemption in respect of women workers.

JP
