I am working in the oil & energy sector as an HR executive. Recently, while surfing a site, I came across an advertisement seeking men and women for a petroleum company in xxx country. I applied and received an email stating that the company has selected me, and I am supposed to obtain a work visa by depositing $550. When I inquired if the company could handle the visa expenses and deduct it from my salary, they mentioned that they do not have such a policy. Moreover, the contact number provided for the HR personnel is unreachable, and the company does not have an official website.
I am facing great confusion. What should I do? Please advise.

Please do not believe in such emails and refrain from paying any amount. Initially, they will ask you to pay Rs. 25,000/-, and then they will request further increasing amounts. However, if you try to approach the embassy or the company mentioned, they will not be available.
Even if the company does exist, the email you received did not originate from them. If you personally visit the company, the security personnel at the gate will not allow you inside because the appointment letter you possess is fake.
If a company offers you an appointment letter based solely on your resume, consider the credibility of such a company.
Exercise caution when transferring any amount to a bank account or issuing a check or draft to anyone. Similar scams are also being conducted using the names of Maruti, Videocon, and Tata companies.
Instead of investing time in responding to fake call or appointment letters, utilize it productively for yourself or someone who could benefit.

At the outset, I want to warn you not to be greedy. Kindly live a contented life. I am sorry for this because it was your mistake not to cross-verify the employer before deciding to remit $550. Kindly don't get excited whenever you come across such offers. I am sure out of excitement, you remitted $550.
I can give you a list of names of those who lost thousands of rupees. Some of them lost in lakhs, more than $2500, just hoping for better pay, a better job, and a better life.
There are professionals in the world known for cheating innocent human beings, and we human beings get cheated whenever somebody says they will pay us more or that we are selected. But no one will think why someone wants to pay us more or why I am selected. You will never give a second thought about these points. It's our brain; out of enthusiasm, it reacts beyond normal limits.
Such professionals are even in India. A prime example is fake campus recruitments that charge money from students. Mr. Bhaskar rightly said someone promoted online recruitment for Videocon (a multinational company), and many fell prey to it. Later, Maruti India Limited came into the picture.
Kindly understand the international recruitment process. If any employer/consultant/recruiter is demanding money, it is definitely a fake recruitment. Please don't fall prey to such websites. Even today, I receive such emails, but I never take action without evaluating them.
Be calculative, analytical, and research-oriented in your professional and personal life.
I am surprised that you, being an HR executive, got cheated. So, do you understand HRM?

My sincere advice to you is to learn to share certain things in your life with those whom you trust and consider their advice before proceeding further. Learn to investigate as well.
