Hi all,

I want to ask you, can a recruiter's experience get me a job in HR? As people say, if you have recruitment experience, you would be able to get into HR later... is it true? I am working as an ITES recruiter now. Shall I also gather IT recruiter experience to get a good job in HR?

Please reply.

Hi Minakshi,

My name is Amit Seth, and I work for an IT company in Ahmedabad. The field of HR comprises numerous functions. To enter core HR, an MBA degree specializing in HR is essential. Currently, you are involved in only one aspect of HR functions, whereas core HR positions entail a wider range of responsibilities.

However, having an MBA in HR opens up opportunities to transition to core HR roles. For instance, a friend of mine worked as an IT recruiter for a year before moving into core HR. While this transition may seem straightforward, a strong understanding of HR functions is crucial beforehand.

Best regards,

Amit Seth

Hi Minakshi,

This is Jithu, an MBA (HR) student. I may not be the right person to suggest, but based on my knowledge, through consultancy jobs, you can gain a lot of exposure to all HR functions. This experience can help you transition to core HR. Work in this field for some time before making the shift.

Hi,

I am sure that currently working as a recruiter will help you get a job in Core HR because it is my own experience. I worked only 5 months as a recruiter in consultancy, and now I am working as an HR Executive in a S/W Company.

One thing I suggest is to keep revising all the HR-related functions and not to stick to recruitment for a long time if you are trying for a Core HR job.

Thanks

Hi,

I am sure that currently working as a recruiter will help you secure a job in Core HR. This is based on my own experience; I worked only 5 months as a recruiter in a consultancy, and now I am working as an HR Executive in a software company.

One thing I suggest is to keep revising all HR-related functions and not to stick to recruitment for too long if you are aiming for a Core HR job.

Thanks

Hi, I am sure if you are a good recruiter, you can get a job in any software company. Nowadays, every big organization has divided the whole HR into two sections: core HR and resourcing. Recruiting from consultancies and companies is very different. Once you join a software company, you will feel the difference. If you really enjoy recruitment, then you should continue doing this. The scope is really good for a good recruiter in a software company. Maybe after working for some time, you can become a resource manager.

I have the same experience. I worked as an IT recruiter for 4 years. Then, I joined one of my clients as AM-HR. Here, I am learning other spheres of HR as well, with recruitment as a major responsibility. One more thing, I don't have an MBA degree as of now, but I am a very good recruiter and also doing well in HR.

So, give your 100% in whatever you are doing. That's all that matters.

Thanks,
Smita

Dear Minakshi,

As most of the members here rightly indicate, recruitment is not the only function of HR. However, I would like to make a point here. Moving forward in today's circumstances, core HR activities will revolve around recruitment and retention, with all other functions supporting this. This point was also highlighted in an article in "The Week."

So, do not panic if you do not have a management degree. You can still secure a job in HR, as indicated by Smitha. I suggest enhancing your knowledge in different domains of HR by studying for and obtaining a management degree.

Thank you all for suggesting me this much. You know what, it's been around 3 months since I got an opportunity to work in a US-based MNC as a recruitment specialist. Good job, good exposure, it's completely IT hiring for my own company. I'm enjoying it. :)

Could you suggest what package is available in the market for someone with 2 years of experience? My experience is distributed as follows: 6 months in counseling, 6 months in ITES recruitment, and the remaining 1 year in IT recruitment. I am currently at 1.5 PA.

Looking forward to your response.
