Hi Everyone,

My name is Irshad Fatima I have completed my MBA- HRM in 2004 in India, and then I worked as a recruiter for couple of months. Then I migrated to Australia & joined my hubby in May2006. It's been 8 months now, I found very difficulty in finding a job here especially in HR area. So since last 3 months I have started working as an Administrator in a not profit organization.

As I see in this organization there is no chance to get in the HR area. Please advise me how to start my career in HR here; I don't have any practical experience in other HR aspects like how to make HR Policies, etc. I know only the recruitment process, but I want to learn new skills but how? If any one could give me a chance to work, I can learn as I learned the recruitment techniques. Or do I need to do any course in HR here, say Certificate IV in Business (Human Resources), if I do this course there is only possibility of getting a chance to work as

HR Administrator.

Please let me know is there any special association or forum in Melbourne where I can go and get registered. Please someone give me some suggestions as I want to make my career In HR field.

Hi,

The world has NOT come to an end!

In your situation, I would advise you to take up appropriate courses in HR so that local acceptability of your resume will increase. Simultaneously, perhaps you should make more concerted efforts to locate a job. This can be done through Placement Agencies or references from within your social circles or from those outside of it and those who know you.

Another suggestion is to seek out opportunities to speak on the topics you like, at Rotary and Lions meetings. Maybe you should write on topics of relevance in local newspapers.

You need to get exposure!

I can assure that the Indian qualification may not enjoy formal recognition in many countries, and that would be so for an entirely different set of reasons. In terms of concepts and contents, Indian education ranks with the best of at least the upper quarter!

Another point to note is that HR as a discipline is NOT restricted to the industry alone. I submit that wherever people perform collectively, HR has to be present!

Finally, do not lose heart. There may be delays but never denials!

So, cheer up and rededicate to the search for jobs that you cherish!!

Regards,

Samvedan

Hi Fathima,

Do not get so desperate and disheartened; opportunities do not come to you, but you keep looking for the opportunities. My work experience of 17 years tells me that, in a matter of time, you will get to know about more opportunities in HR from the same organization where you are working right now. Do not shift your job; be there for some more time and try to befriend your new colleagues. You will get the best inputs for your HR career from them.

Hi Fathima,

Do not get so desperate; opportunities do not come to you, but keep looking for them. My 17 years of work experience tells me that with time, you will discover more HR opportunities within the same organization where you currently work. Instead of changing your job, stay there a bit longer. Try to build relationships with your new colleagues, as they can provide valuable insights for your HR career.

Best,
Pujari
