Hi In my opinion training refers to iimparting skills to an employee. This translates into better performance. Various trainings given to employees result in their development. Rgds Arun

Training can result in development or can get initiated from the need for development.
Training is a means to achieve Development.
Training is a process; Development is start/end point
Training is verb (ongoing activity); Development is the target.

Development includes training. An example might help
Development of employees for improved customer service skills.
Training to facilitate this development could be (1) Phone etiquette; (2) Email etiquette.
Training / Development could be class room / on the job / assignment to a senior / Reading up on the subject etc.

Hi Sameer,
We give training to someone to inhance or develop his/her skills.
Training is given to acieve the short term goals where as development is to achieve the long term future goals.

Hi,
Training is more or less is a term used to mention about imparting of specific skill to enhance ones job requirements eg., training given to a welder on new type of welding. Training is skill specific to a individual person at the lower level of hierarchy.
However, development is a process concerned with persons who are/:) suppose to take up more responsibility in Management cadre. It takes care of a persons overall progress for the demands of the present position or imparts knowledge on the position he is going to be elevated so that he can fullfil the requirements of the new role.
Hope this may be acceptable to the participants.

Dear Sameer,

Training and development are generally considered to be the two continuum of a employee. Here are few things which differentiates between Training and development.

1. Training is imparted to a person where it is needed whereas development is a continuous process.

A person if helped to learn on a particular technology, It is said to be training whereas if a person is imparted on few aspects which might not be required directly to his profile but which would influence his work like managerial skills is known as development.

2. Training is generally given to the operational level employees and development is done for middle level and top level executives.

3. Training need analysis is done to capture the training requirements of a resource whereas development activities are based on the role of the employee.

4. Training focuses on short term needs whereas the development is highly focused on long term needs. For example, training is a sort of organized event whereas development takes place in a continuous basis.(eg. Job rotation)

5. Training specically focuses on making the employee learn about a new technology or new advancements in his routine process whereas development is done for the enhancement of the personal qualities of a employee.

Hope this might give you a small idea of differentiating training from development. in a nutshell, training is a narrow term whereas development is a broad term
