Hi,
The simplest thing that you can do is to send an e-greeting to the employee.(The best thing about it is that it is free of cost.)

www.123gretings.com

This way you can economically greet him/her on other important occasions as well(like marraige anniversary, birth of a child. Also the website helps you plan in advance. You can send the mail 6 months in advance )
You can also send a small gift items (Like coffee mugs, pens, etc depending on your budget).

Shyamali

we celebrate birthday slight differently in our organization
1) Mail is sent by HR with a picture to whole office a day in advance
2) Balloons are put up in the respective person's place so that the whole office is aware.
3) cake and gift voucher worth 1000/-rs is ordered
4) All the employees get together and cut the cake wish him/her and splash the cake on him and give gift voucher.

Hi Khyati I think having a cake cutting once in month and buying a card getting it signed from thr team meets before you hand it over to them will be a good and economical idea. Regards Amith R.

Hi Khyati,
In our organisation we do the following to wish an employee on his Bthday:
1) Display his name on the LCD screen at the reception
2) HR team goes and meet the employee and wish him
3) Hands over the Birthday card and the Gift card with loaded amount to his manager
4) Last friday of the month is celebrated as the Birthday for the month with cake cutting and some fun activities.
These are the few things which we do.
Cheers!!

Hi..
Most economical way is to put the employee name in the notice board. And morning before the employee comes, tie balloons n his seat. Later team leader can give sweet to him on the behalf of every one.

Dear Khyati

It is nice idea to celebrate the birth day of employee on his or her birthday. It is needless to say as it brings the self of belongingness among all employees if we celebrate birth day function for all employees as and when their birthday falls . Being an HR professional we are having the data of date of births of employees in our service records.

In some of the organizations the expenses incurred in connection with birthday celebrations is being born by the management. However, in some of the organizations where the management is not contributing for such type of celebrations, the employees association are contributing. In such a case being an HR professional we have to make the management to aware of the importance of celebrating such funtions within the organisation in order to keep up morale, satisfaction and self of belongingness among all empoyees whose contribution is essential to attain the common goals of the organisation.

Objectives

As all we know that we are spending at about 8- 10 hours in a day in attending office work and having many friends among our colleagues, bosses and subordinates within the organization.

So, being an employee if our birth day is celebrated by our colleagues and co-employees it gives a lot of pleasure and happiness for which we cannot term it as in the terms of monetary benefit.

We need not spend much money on the occasion of birth day celebrations of any employee.

One birth day cake - size is to be commensurate with the no.employees of particular department or whole organisation.

Garland and boques

Sweet and hot packets

Cool drinks/ coffee or tea

one birth day gift

Where the organisation is not willing to contribute for the celebration of birth day of employees, the employees themselve can contribute for it by way of subcription varying from Rs 50- Rs 100/ per person. Every body knows that this amount is not so big for any employee.

If we do like this for each employee whose birth day is celebrated in an organisation it must be immomerable day in his or her life.

Your sincerely
