Dear Seniors,
I am working for an IT company. Our weekend is Saturday and Sunday.
Now we are facing a situation that few employees take leaves for a whole week.
For e.g ; Monday to Friday.
That means last week's Saturday and Sunday and the week of leaves Saturday and Sunday are also holidays for them!!!
Now my company wants to know that can we cut any one of the weekends(Saturday and Sunday) from their leave balance??
What to do to stop this manipulation of the 2 days week off?
Can we have any rule like considering any one of the Weekends as leaves?
Or can you please suggest me some other alternatives??
Kindly reply me asap....

Dear Member, If the leaves are taken by permission then you cannot consider Saturday or Sunday as leave. Unless the preceding day is absence (leave without permission) you cannot do the same.

Dear Mr. Shreekanth....
Thanks for your valuable interventions.
But my question is still unanswered.....
The problem which the employees are facing is that they take leave from Monday to Friday i.e all the 5 working days of the week. Our policy is that every Saturday and Sunday of the month are official holidays. SO when ever they take Monday to Friday leave they can even use the Saturday and Sunday of the current week and the last week.
Now my company wants to know whether they can cut any of the Saturday and Sunday as leave? Means even if it is as an official leave as per the policy can it be deducted from the employees balanced leave? That means if 5 days are taken as leave then the deduction would be 7 days from the leave balance..

Hello Khyati,
In my opinion some of companies consider sat & sun as leave when someone wants to take leave on fri & mon.
But you have to make some policy for that & it should be in somewhat defined format then only you can deduct the 2 extra leaves i.e. sat & sun from the leave balance. It can be applicable for 5 days leaves also.

My suggestion is don't approve such leave untill and unless its an emergency or else supported by a valid reason.

Add this point in your leave policy stating that " Keeping productivity in mind any employee in order to avail continous leave of 5working days in a week should provide prior notice to the HR department at least 10 working days before he/she intends their leave to commence, and it must be approved before the employee takes leave, if not all leaves right from last week saturday to current week sunday will be deducted from their leave account.
In case of being sick they have to produce medical certificate along with the prescription given by the doctor.(Getting a medical certificate is very easy these days) or else all leaves right from last week saturday to current week sunday will be deducted from their leave account.

The company reserves the right to amend the policy if required at a future date. So change your policy that even saturdays are half - working days and odd saturdays are declared as official off to the employees. That half-a-day can be used for training purpose.
Hope its of some help to you.

In line with same or my view, if any employee takes/avails LOP or unauthorized leave on the last day of the week and first day of subsequent week, the holidays/weekly off’s fall between these leaves would also be treated as Loss of Pay.
