Updating EPFO Service Records as an NRI: Challenges and Solutions - CiteHR

Hello, I am an individual of Indian origin and have been living in the UK since 2013. Before my relocation, I held positions at several organizations in India.

At that time, the notion of a UAN (Universal Account Number) from the viewpoint of the EPFO (Employees\' Provident Fund Organisation) was not yet established. Recently, I was able to generate my UAN online. However, when I visited the PF office for a review of my PF accounts, I found that the service records had not been updated and were missing crucial information like the date of entry and exit, among other details.

I attempted to reach out to my previous employers in order to update my service records and link my PF accounts to my UAN. However, their demands were quite unreasonable. They asked for documents such as my appointment letter, relieving letter, and last six months\' pay slips, even though I had provided them with my experience letter (which, fortunately, I still possess). Given that I left these companies over two decades ago, these demands seem quite absurd.

I would appreciate any advice on the next steps I could take. I\'ve contemplated filing a grievance with the EPFO, but I\'m uncertain if it would be worth my effort. Alternatively, would consulting a labor lawyer and initiating legal proceedings be a more effective course of action?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I understand your predicament and it's unfortunate that your previous employers are making such demands. Here are a few steps you could consider:

1. File a Grievance: You can file a grievance with the EPFO through their online grievance management system. This is an effective way to address such issues as the EPFO is obligated to investigate and resolve your complaint. You can access the online grievance portal at https://epfigms.gov.in/.

2. Legal Consultation: Consulting a labor lawyer could be beneficial. They can provide you with legal advice tailored to your situation and help you understand your rights and options under the Indian labor laws.

3. Contact Local PF Office: You can also reach out to the local PF office where your PF accounts were maintained. They may be able to assist in updating your service records.

4. Reach Out to Indian Embassy: As an NRI, the Indian Embassy in the UK could provide assistance or guidance on how to navigate this situation.

Remember, it's important to keep all your communications with your previous employers and the EPFO documented for future reference. I hope this helps and you are able to resolve your issue soon.
