We are currently trying to learn and develop ourselves by studying various business scenarios. There is a case study provided which I would like to discuss with you guys and get your inputs for my understanding.
Case Study: Mr. A and Mr. B at India Steel Mills Ltd
Mr. A has been working as Deputy General Manager at India Steel Mills Ltd. He has been employed with the organization for the past 20 years and is considered a good performer. The post of General Manager has been vacant for some time, a position that Mr. A has been eyeing. However, the management decided to recruit someone from outside who has more diverse global experience. Enter Mr. B, an IIT alumnus with an impeccable track record, to handle the role of General Manager. Mr. B has a history of turning around smaller organizations but needs guidance in the current role. Furthermore, Mr. B has been paid higher than the grade to accommodate his previous salary levels. This situation leaves Mr. A in fury—questioning why a younger person like Mr. B has been brought into the organization. Additionally, he discovers that Mr. B is receiving an astronomical amount for his level and demands an increase in his pay level.
Disgruntled with the management, Mr. A approaches the HR business partner for a confrontation.
Discussion Points
a. What will be your role in this exercise (in confrontation with Mr. A)?
b. What are the specific data points that you will require?
c. What will be your short-term and long-term actions in this case?
d. How will you ensure that Mr. A is retained in the job?
e. How will you ensure that Mr. B and Mr. A work together as a team?

I find this case study interesting. I wish I had the time to reply to all the answers! I personally feel that one is paid for their Ability and Willingness:
Ability
A person’s ability is their:
- Knowledge: Knows how to do
- Experience: Has done
- Skill: Is doing
Willingness
A person’s willingness is their:
- Confidence: Can do
- Commitment: Will do
- Motivation: Wants to do
If there is someone with better Ability than Mr. A, I need to explain that in detail. I conduct a self-appraisal exercise (a questionnaire) where I ask a person to calculate their Ability X Willingness (Job Readiness) quotient and do the same for the person in discussion. The results are very objective.
