I have got 2 offers from different companies. One of them is top most in Indian construction business and the second one is from my known person who starts his own construction business(strong in getting construction job).
1st company gives me middle management post in site location and 2nd company gives me top management post in metro city (home town). Salary in 2nd company is 2 lacs more per annum than 1st.
I am 14 years exp. BE (civil) with post graduate in construction management.
Now I am confused to select the offer, keeping in mind the job security, home town, family.
Can someone pl. guide me regarding the selection of company?

Hello Mr. Das,
I can understand your confusion. However, my opinion is that you must go with the second company.
While the reasons might seem obvious - home town posting, top management post, higher salary and all, those are not the reasons for my opinion.
What I see is that the second company is just starting out. So with your experience and qualifications, you will be able to make a significant contribution in its growth and success. Five or ten years down the line, you will be able to confidently say that you had a major role in so and so company taking off from the ground.
This might not be the case with the 1st one which is already at a top level. There you will be a small fish in a big pond. My opinion has always been to be a big fish in a small pond than the other way around.
I hope this helps you :).

Thanks sir for your valuable support. One thing which is more concern to me is: always the second one is benificial to me, but if it fails then will I get any resale value to other company or how I can prepare my backup for near future?
Hope you can help me to find out a storng future step.

Thanks for your valuable support. I have done the SWOT analysis and it indicates towards the 1st company to join, as you rightly indicate.
But only thing , which I think that whether in 1st comapny, I shall become a small fish in big pond. For future growth or to apply my own experience, whether I have to take the permission of my boss? I have to work in set fit system and procedure, which company already established and a require change requires heavy pressure? I have done my post graduation in Construction Management also.
Pl. let me know your view point on that.

Hi,
If you are hard working and have solid experience, you can always be successful in big pond. All it matters is your hardwork and growth of the company.Taking permission from your boss should not be mattered so much. Its good if you maintain the protocol. Its a learning process for you.
By selecting 2nd job you have to be answerable for each and everything to your friend and that may ruin your relation with him.My suggestion is not to encourage friendship/Monetary terms into career growth as that may affect your personal life !!!
Try to work as a consultant for your friend's company.

Dear Sir,
As has been rightly pointed out in the above messages, please take up the position with the first company and offer your friendship suggestion to your friend (second company) for him to grow.
If you are sincere and true to yourself, you do not have to worry about your future. The postions, higher salary will be after you. All you need is more courage to take the first assignment and do it perfectly with lot of enjoyment to your satisfaction.
Wishing you all the very best in your new endeavour,

Dear Mr.das,

There are certain factors that is worth considering while deciding career moves.

1. If you are married (I trust you are as you have around 14 year of experience and should be around 35 years of age). Your wife should be willing to move out of your home town. If she has issues in joint family and wants to live with you independently then the choice varies.

2. If you have a kid around 5 years of age schooling is not a matter. It can be either in hometown or otherwise.

3. A matter of 2 Lakhs more is certainly attractive but remember he is your friend, keeping him at an arms distance is wise enough.

4. You have also mentioned that it is a start up company. Touch wood if it flourishes OK. If it does not get in right direction you will again have to wait for the right opportunity. You can't ditch your friend all of a sudden and come away it will be difficult if you are too close to him. Moreover you may not get a job equivalent to the pay you are drawing (remember it will be 2 Lakhs more than the market price). So your standard of living will be 2 Lakhs higher and your future employer will be suspicious if you are willing to settle down for a lower pay even if you wish to take up the assignment.

5. In a bigger company that is well established the systems will be in place and will be more organised. You can move up the career ladder is you have confidence in you and work intelligently.

6. There is no single formula to decide the right job.

All the best!!
