Hi all,

I am Radha, a new member at CiteHR although not new to HR. I really love the way this site manages to bring in the creme of the HR fraternity on one platform to share views and opinions on mutually relevant topics. I had a great time reading some of the fabulous articles posted here.

Well, I am a postgraduate in Psychology, and HR is a subject very close to my soul, I should say, and that's what brings me to this family of HR enthusiasts.

I am also on this site to find some advice on pursuing a career in HR. My case is a tad different because I do not have an MBA in HR, nor do I have relevant HR experience. I have posted my profile on the "HR Professionals Forum" seeking opportunities in OB and OD.

I passionately want to have a career in HR. I have about 6 years of experience, but mostly in Customer Service. For the last 1 year, I have been on my own, consulting as a behavioral trainer for B-schools in Bangalore. It's my passion for people development and learning that steered my career in this direction.

Please do read my other post which has my profile details and tell me, "Isn't it possible for someone to have a career in HR without having the specific academic background or experience, although he/she may possess all the required skill sets and knowledge for the role?"

Would love to get some thoughts on this from veteran members at CiteHR.

Looking forward to greater learning and a lot of fun out here.

Thank you for the patient reading and time.

Best Regards,

Radha

Seeking a Commercial HR Career

Based on your brief,

- 6 years of working experience in Customer Service

- Masters in Psychology

An MBA is not a must, but it provides a business understanding that is very useful to fulfill the role of HR. Your objective should be:

- Create visibility
- Position yourself
- Focus on your core competence

Take your major core competence (in OB, etc.) and place it into customer relationship management to drive your visibility/competence to exhibit how and what you can do to create excellence in performance/results.

Your combination of knowledge/skills would be useful in industries that are highly customer-oriented and have a high labor content such as:

- Freight forwarding companies
- Courier service companies
- 5-star hotels
- Large hospitals
- Large retail chains
- Banking/financial services, etc.

However, the only handicap seems to be your preference for Bangalore. Chennai could be a good potential.

In your interview, you should position yourself to show how you would contribute to the employees by developing their competence, confidence, and professionalism to handle customer communication, complaints, servicing, creating customer satisfaction, adding value to customer requirements, sales, relations, etc.

By using your customer service skills, psychology, OB knowledge, etc., you can show how to improve the company's business strategy/results by providing performance-related HR services such as effective recruitment/selection, proactive talent management, a relative rewards system, creative learning system, dynamic organizational commitment through motivation and job satisfaction programs, effective performance management system, managing change, changing behaviors through training/development, etc.

You can add more elements of your choice, all leading to better financial performance.

What I have outlined is a broad general approach; you can tailor it in your own personal style. You can always add a diploma in HR on the run. You should pursue this with conviction and not just try.

Good luck!

Thank you for your comprehensive response! I appreciate the time you took to guide me on what to highlight and what not to. Positioning myself as you have suggested seems to be the ideal way to establish a career in HR. One must have conviction to persevere and achieve their goals.

I am considering enhancing my skills further with a suitable HR course, possibly a diploma as you suggested. I will explore online or distance education courses for this purpose. I will reflect on your suggestions, confident they will greatly assist me in pursuing my dream of working in HR.

My first day as a member at CiteHR has been very rewarding. I look forward to more learning and contributing to this wealth of knowledge and experience.

Best Regards,
Radha
