Hi Team, I need some help on how to negotiate with HR as my degree certificate was flagged as fake during the background verification process at my current company. However, this issue did not arise in my previous company, Dell, where I worked for 8 years.

All my certificates, including my 10th, 12th, joining, and relieving letters, were successfully verified as they were genuine except for my degree, which was obtained through distance education.

In my previous role at Dell, the same degree certificate was accepted without any problems during the background verification process when I joined in 2013. Upon researching online, I found that the university is still active but has discontinued some courses, including my BCA program.

The current job description for my role does not specifically mention any qualification requirements; it focuses on experience and skills only.

I would like to explore the possibility of withdrawing my degree and continuing my employment based on my 12th-grade marks card. Could you advise me on how to approach HR to discuss this matter and what potential consequences I may face?

I am concerned about losing my job, especially since I have been performing well and have received appreciation for my work.

Please assist me in finding a resolution.

Regards, Rjrls

Dear RJRLS, Is your degree certificate genuine or fake? You have not written clearly. If it is the former, then you may submit an application to HR clarifying your position. In the same letter, put forth your request to accept your candidature based on the Class XII certificate.

Thanks,

Hello Dinesh, Thank you for your response. After background verification in the current company, the certificate was declared as fake as the University itself has sent an email to HR in writing on a letterhead stating that the registration number is invalid, etc.

If it is the former, then you may submit an application to HR clarifying your position. In the same letter, put forth your request to accept your candidature based on the Class XII certificate.

Thanks for this advice, Dinesh. I hope my current company gives me all such options. If not, what could be the consequences? Also, please suggest other alternatives for me so I don't lose the job.

Dear Rjrls,

If the university has vouched for the fakeness of the degree certificate, then it has made your position far weaker. I don't think there is anything for your defense. There is no point in putting forth any application as no company will hire a candidate in spite of the discovery of the forgery by a candidate.

Therefore, it is better to let go of this job opportunity. When applying for future jobs, apply on the strength of a Class XII certificate.

Thanks,

Dinesh Divekar
