Hello, Everyone. I am a student of HR. While doing a presentation on the Factories Act of 1948, my teacher asked me about the height of the walls of a factory workshop and the proportion of windows for ventilation on the wall. May I know if there are any prescribed rules for the measurement of the wall's size and the proportion of windows for ventilation?

That's an interesting question, I must say. Even I was not aware of the above fact. But one day, the factory inspector paid a visit and started the measurement after disclosing the present rule. It's 18 feet.

As per the Factory Act 1948 and UP Factory Rule 1950 sec-6(i) and 112:
Internal Height Requirements
The internal height of a workroom shall be not less than 14 feet, measured from the floor level to the lowest part of the roof. If the roof is made of corrugated iron, which is neither covered with tiles nor has an inner ceiling or lining of heat-resisting material with an air space of at least four inches between it and the corrugated iron, the internal height shall be not less than 20 feet.
Provided that in the case of buildings having a brick or concrete roof, or a combination of the two, the minimum height may be 12 feet if approved by the Chief Inspector of Factories.
Exemptions for Certain Factories
Furthermore, in the case of all factories registered under Section 2(m)(ii), and factories registered under Section 2(m)(i) of the Act employing up to 50 workers, the Chief Inspector may, where he is satisfied that the conditions of work are reasonably good, exempt such factories from the provisions of this sub-rule.
Ventilation Requirements
Window, ventilator, and skylight area should be provided at the minimum rate of 1 sq. ft. to every 15 sq. ft. of floor area of the room (Rule 19).
