I am a bit confused and tense; please solve my query below. I have an MBA in Finance & Marketing and have been working as a Marketing Coordinator in the healthcare sector for the last 2 years. I have now received another opportunity from one of the leading brands in the same sector as an "Executive Assistant to MD." They have also offered me a good salary hike. However, I am very confused about whether I should go for this position or not.

Many people are saying that this is a secretary job with no growth potential in the future. I am requesting all of you to please guide me on the correct path.

Thank you.

Understanding the Role of an Executive Assistant to the Managing Director

An Executive Assistant to the Managing Director is not a secretarial job. A secretary typically handles routine tasks such as coordinating with travel operators, typing letters, managing office files, and handling other correspondence, as well as managing the MD's appointments.

Responsibilities of an Executive Assistant

The role of an Executive Assistant to the MD is much more valuable. In this position, the individual is expected to possess knowledge of the organization, the company's work culture, and industry-specific knowledge. Responsibilities may include conducting market research, managing tenders and contracts, and engaging in various management functions like HR, Marketing, and Finance. Essentially, you serve as a miniature MD. By taking on this role, you gain a bird's-eye view of the organization and closely observe your MD's management style, including senior-level management flaws.

Typically, individuals are promoted internally to this position due to their familiarity with the organization's operations. I am somewhat concerned in your case. Do you possess a comprehensive understanding of the industry?

Before making a decision to join, it would be beneficial to gather more information about the company. Additionally, it's important to alleviate any concerns you may have about equating this position with that of a secretary.
