Career Transition to HR

I have been working for the last 10 years. Previously, I was in finance, but after the recession, I left my job as a share market dealer and transitioned into an administrative role. While planning to pursue my post-graduation, I discovered that an MBA in HR would be suitable for my current position in Administration, as mentioned in the college prospectus. Subsequently, I recently joined JBIMS for a part-time MBA in HR.

I am now actively seeking a job in HR to gain valuable experience in the field and enhance my career prospects. As a newcomer in HR, I am wondering how I can secure a job in this domain. Is it necessary to undertake a short-term payroll course? If yes, could you please suggest where I can enroll in such courses in Mumbai?

I would greatly appreciate your guidance on this matter.

Since you have decided to pursue HR and have taken admission in a part-time MBA-HR program at JBIMS, the suggestion to pursue finance, given your 10 years of experience, is not of much use now. You can try to get into either payroll or recruitment executive jobs to start with and then slowly transition into an HR-Generalist role. There are some private institutions in Mumbai imparting training in Generalist-HR. In the meantime, you can finish your MBA.

Transitioning to a Generalist Role

It is not necessary to focus solely on a specialized profile. Consider transitioning into a generalist role, even at the entry level, leveraging your existing experience in administrative positions. Depending on the sector in which you have worked, you can target that specific industry for a smoother transition. Alternatively, you may explore opportunities in the retail sector, where a foundation in both administration and HR can facilitate your entry into a more general profile.
