Our management is requesting that we do one reverse FMEA a month. Can anyone please explain what that is? They didn't provide any training or give any explanations!

Also, what is the difference between an FMEA and a reverse FMEA? We produce machined parts for transmission in the automotive industry. Any assistance on the definition and steps on how to would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

FMEA = Failure Mode Effect Analysis.

For example, snapping of brake wire in a two-wheeler can lead to an accident. Snapping of brake wire is a failure mode causing the effect of an accident. Now, you analyze what will be the severity of this failure mode, what is the probability of occurrence, and can this failure mode be detected. Based on your analysis, you take preventive actions, such as designing a high-strength, rust-free, rod-like brake wire, etc.

Reverse FMEA is the reverse of the whole process. For example, you are taking a shower and burnt your skin. The failure modes can be electric shock, malfunctioning of thermostat, malfunctioning of water mixing knob, etc. Now, you take preventive actions to eliminate the electric shock possibility, thermostat malfunctioning possibility, etc.

So it is basically what it states, which explains why I couldn't find anything about it anywhere online! There are no specific steps needed to be followed? Thank you for your input - I appreciate it!

Reverse FMEA is a structured process for the FMEA's review. It is performed by a multifunctional team on the shop floor, based on real data. Nowadays, it is a specific requirement from GM and Renault Groupe.
