Hi, I wanted to understand what kind of skill set or qualifications are required to work as a placement officer in any institute. If someone is from a purely recruitment consultancy background, can he or she apply for it? Your kind replies are most welcome.

A person with experience in recruitment may fit into the role of a Placement Officer at an educational institute. However, the roles and responsibilities increase with this position compared to a recruiter in a firm. The primary focus remains the same, acting as a link between the employer and the candidate.
In the case of a placement officer, the scope of candidate skill sets is limited to the number of students available in the institute. Therefore, a placement officer has to sell the skills of students to employers.
Additionally, a placement officer needs to brief students on job market realities, opportunities in the market, etc.
You can search on this site or Google for the job description of a placement officer to get a good idea of what the role entails.
As a placement officer, he/she can orient students with interview techniques, soft skills, the art of negotiation, CV writing, etc.
The placement officer shall remain updated with students' profiles, previous work experience, academic achievements, and other special attributes that can match job requirements.
The role also involves seeking employers and bringing them to the campus for hiring. Establishing relationships with HRs from corporations and promoting students for placements as appropriate are key responsibilities.
This job requires a lot of networking with employers and mentoring students for the best fit.

One more question: If one applies to an MCA / MBA institute for a placement officer’s position... Is it necessary to be graduate in the same stream????

Not necessary, but the employer may keep that as a requirement. However, I feel any graduate with a smart personality, relevant experience in recruitment, very good communication, networking, selling, negotiating, and coordinating skills backed by relevant experience to prove these skills can be a good fit.
Understanding the Role of a Placement Officer
As you mentioned about MCA/MBA institutes, any placement coordinator (PC) or recruiter has to understand the demand and supply dynamics of job opportunities. Therefore, the recruiter or PC should understand the job descriptions (JDs) and skill sets available with candidates.

I have almost 6 years of experience in different domains. I am currently working with a Delhi-based college for the past 6 months. Can anybody help me with a sample resume for a Training and Placement Officer (TPO) and provide tips for applying to colleges/universities or for vacant positions in the same industry?

I am presently working as a Placement Officer for a Computer Education Institute. As I am new to this area, I would like to gain insight into the placement roles and responsibilities. How should I find a prospective employer? What are the things I should consider when negotiating a placement deal?
In addition, I have the responsibility to train the students at the institute in soft skills and personality development. Please advise on the HR negotiation process.
