Environmental Policy: Addressing Pollution and Waste Management
I am a new member. In environmental policy, how can we address water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, soil pollution, radioactive pollution, oil spillage, chemical-mixed water, and the segregation of waste into categories? If all wastes are disposed of together, they may become rotten and create a significant hazard to the environment. Can anyone help me understand how to take precautions to minimize these hazards?

Dear Mr. Ashok, it's nice to hear such positive words from you. You really wish to do something for your organization; the only thing is that you need some guidance. I am not from an environmental background, so I can give you only a few tips. Recently, our plant obtained IMS (ISO 9001:2008 & ISO 14001:2004) certification. I am an Internal Auditor of our plant for IMS, so I have some knowledge that I will try to share with you.
Environmental Management System (EMS)
An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a part of an organization's management system used to develop and implement its environmental policy and manage its environmental aspects. So, first of all, you have to create an environmental policy. Our plant's IMS Policy and another sample are attached, from which you can create your own. If your company already has one, that's great; you just have to proceed according to that.
Identifying and evaluating the environmental aspects-impacts is the next step. These are the building blocks of EMS. With the help of all other departments, examine each activity in your organization and determine if any of those activities are impacting the environment. If so, try to develop action plans to address those issues. Once you succeed in doing this, you are 80% done towards EMS.
"Environment Aspect: Element of an organization's activities or products or services that can interact with the environment."
"Environmental Impact: Any change to the environment, whether adverse or beneficial, wholly or partially resulting from an organization's environmental aspects."
Here are a few examples:
Aspect: Generation and storage of waste
Impacts: Visual impact; odor; degradation of the local environment if waste escapes; depletion of resources; energy and resource use in managing waste, plus subsequent pollution.
Aspect: Disposal of waste - landfill
Impacts: Visual disturbance; noise; vehicle pollution; energy use and subsequent impacts; methane production; groundwater pollution; resource depletion (land).
Aspect: Disposal - incineration
Impact: Air emissions and impacts; odor; noise; visual impact; global warming; landfill of ashes; recovery of energy from waste.
Activity: Vehicle Operation
Aspect: Generation of Engine Exhaust
Impact: Air Pollution
By conducting the above exercise, you will definitely identify all sources of pollution like air, water, land, etc. Then, you can create plans to reduce these pollutions.
Perform all the necessary monitoring required under statutory requirements such as ambient air, fugitive dust emission, water, personal sampling, etc. If the results are not within the limits, consider suitable control measures to bring them within the defined limit.
