Swapna,

You have missed out on "Classic Stripes." The company makes labels for major corporations and was established around 1947. It has been voted as the second-best place to work, surpassing Infosys, etc.

Some salient points about the company include:
- The average salary of a worker is ₹20,000 per month.
- The lowest bonus percentage is 14% per annum.
- Last year, every worker was given a motorcycle, and female employees were provided with automatic scooters.
- The company did not have an HR manager for all these years.
- The philosophy of "Quality at Source" is followed, similar to Sony, with no separate quality control department.

During the Mumbai floods last year, the management offered assistance to employees for home rebuilding. Surprisingly, out of over 300 people, only 9 applied for help, showcasing the honesty and dignity of the employees in not applying unnecessarily for aid.

Hi Sapna,

This information will be of great help. Actually, I am working on various benefits that can be given to an employee apart from the usual perks. This will help me in deciding on a few of them.

Thanks,

Dear Rana ji,

Can you tell us something more about the company? You have mentioned that there is no HR Manager; then how are the policies framed and controlled? Please do share some more information on the company.

Thank you.

Dear Faiz,

Glad that this note was of some help to you.

Swapna,

I have taken a subscription of "Human Capital", published by HR Information Services, M-64, Lado Sarai, Mehrauli Badarpur Road, Tel: 29523466/3583.

Website: www.humancapitalonline.com.

The article on classic stripes was in the May '07 edition. One of my colleagues has borrowed the magazine so I'm sorry I can't provide more information.

Swapna, concerning your query about the HR aspect of the company in the absence of an HR manager, it is simple.

Approximately 100 years ago, JRD Tata wrote a small booklet named HR. He was concerned about one simple thing - in large concerns, an employee may be facing one of the toughest times of his life while, on the other hand, the CEO is saddled with problems of running the enterprise. This is where HR comes into the picture. HR is not person-specific; it is more about an aspect of doing business the right way.

You must have gone through the annals of Six Sigma Enterprise. In India, the Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Charitable Trust has been effectively supplying tiffin boxes with only 1 system failure in 137 years. Poor, unlettered folks with no access to resources are beating big corporations. Two of their oldest members now teach at IIMs.
