Hi all,

I have recently been promoted to a managerial level. I do not have much experience yet; however, expectations are very high. I would need a lot of practical learning and implementation support. I like this site and hope to build a network soon.

Dear Mohana,

I understand your concern. Yes, many people would have similar concerns when they move into a management level. But as a subject matter expert like yourself, the first thing as a manager you should do is to be clear on communication channels because that would help you understand how your company or organization is operating. Secondly, consider your position among your peers and think about your next steps. In management, continuous learning and development (PDC) is what sets you apart from other managers. Analyze the role of your organization and your department. Look at your department's vision and mission, and identify the strategies needed to achieve them.

Managers have a crucial role in their departments. They must consistently perform according to the company's KPIs. Furthermore, they need to continuously improve their skills and enhance their staff's performance by motivating and making them more productive. This can be achieved with a clear vision and understanding of your role.

Lastly, consider being a member of an international association, such as the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) or join management groups on platforms like LinkedIn. This international exposure will enable you to use management techniques such as understanding stakeholders, organizational behaviors, staff performance KPIs, and financial management controls in departments.

I hope you find this information beneficial.

Dear Mohana,

Take this opportunity as a challenge and face it boldly. Try to understand what you are supposed to do in your new position. Make a table diary of all the tasks you have to do from morning till evening, including weekly, monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and annual tasks. Communicate with supporting staff to maintain records, registers, and files for your verification. Create a list of tasks you must handle yourself based on the aforementioned schedule. Keep track of daily activities, processes, and interactions in your notepad. Before leaving the office, ensure that today's tasks are completed by your team and yourself. Prepare a list of tasks for the next day. Build a strong network with HR professionals, government officials, and other relevant stakeholders. Engage with functional heads, listen to their issues, and resolve them promptly. Informally meet employees at the workplace, listen to their concerns, or invite them to your office. Establish good rapport with them.

Stand firm on your decisions while being flexible without compromising organizational policies. If needed, propose amendments to rules that may hinder achieving the organization's objectives.
