Hi All,
I take care of Training and Development in my organization. We have been conducting training needs assessments through a training need identification survey. In the past year, we have also addressed training needs based on competencies/skills, and we are continuing to work on the same.
This year, I am looking to approach this process differently. Could you please share some innovative ways with me on how I can conduct the training needs assessment to directly and positively impact the performance of my employees?
Thanks!
Mons

Hi,
Assessing training needs has always been a challenge because any survey invariably leads to the person being surveyed admitting a weakness, which is quite an admission to make. More importantly, there is an unspoken fear this could be used against him/her during appraisal.
You have tried out two methods, both having their merits. Perhaps scanning the annual appraisal form (assuming it has a column asking the rater to indicate the area of training recommended for the person being rated) will give you some additional insights. Alternatively, add a separate sheet listing our various training programs, make it exhaustive and grouped under suitable heads like Functional Competencies, Managerial Competencies, Soft Skills Training, etc., which have to be filled in separately by both the person appraising and the person being appraised. Collating this information would give you more pinpointed inputs and a fair idea of the training needs. Obviously, thereafter you will have to arrange for the suitable training programs. Trust I have managed to give you a fresh perspective.
As a person involved in training, you might also be interested in some motivational and inspirational inputs, which are available on the following blogs:

I used to pull out weekly and monthly performance reports from the database and then analyze the data, look for a particular trend from employees who were not performing, identify the training areas, and then create a module to train those individuals.
But then, I was in a BPO technical process and had an awesome reporting database.
You have already tried the survey method but not all employees truthfully and sincerely take them. Not sure if this will help you.
