Dear All,

Presently, I am associated with a construction company. I just want to know the leave policy that most construction companies implement. Do we need to compensate if employees work on Sundays and holidays, considering they receive high salaries for working at sites, with food and accommodation provided by the company? Kindly provide me with clarity and the best solution for this situation.

Thank you.

Hi,

What does your leave policy state? Do you have any policy implemented? If not, it is better to implement ASAP.

Irrespective of any grade and salary offered, if an employee works on weekends or on declared holidays, then it is compulsory to compensate that day with another working day.

It is not necessary to give a weekly off on Sunday only; you can give any one day during a week as a weekly off. In most construction companies, workers are given compensatory leave on another day instead of holidays. We are in the hotel industry, and it is not practical for us to grant holidays to all staff since we operate 24x7 as a service industry. Therefore, we offer another day off to some employees who work on public holidays. Employees like HR, Admin, and Accounts, who are not required during public holidays, are granted time off to take those holidays.

In the construction industry, it is a common practice for every site employee to receive 60 days of paid leave per year, which equates to 10 months plus 2 months of leave. Additionally, a 10-day sick leave provision is also provided for employees working at the site.
