Hi Friends, I need your views on the distance education BSc IT program offered by the University of Mumbai. I started my BSc IT via regular college and then, due to personal reasons, had to complete the last two years via distance education. As per the university website, "Curricular content, mode of examination, and the degree to be awarded are the same as applicable to the colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai."

The final university exams were held along with regular students, and on my mark sheet or convocation, there is nothing mentioned as distance education. Can you guys please tell me as an HR professional what you look for in a degree when you need to consider distance vs. full-time? Is the degree awarded the same as that awarded to college students?

Thank you for your message. I understand your concern. Currently, most recruiters prefer candidates with full-time degrees. The degree offered by MU through correspondence is equivalent to the one offered on-campus. Do you think HR should have reservations about hiring candidates with a distance learning degree? MU claims there is no distinction.

Clarification on Distance Education Degrees from Mumbai University

The thing that I want to confirm is that Mumbai University does not have a separate degree for distance mode; it is all the same with the same passing criteria. The degree conferred is the same, unlike other universities like IGNOU or SMU. So, what is it that HR looks for? I recently spoke to one of the HRs from a reputed MNC, and as per him, if the degree does not have "distance" mentioned on it, they are okay with that.
