Gentleman,

As an HR you must be ready to hire and fire. The company pays both of you for services rendered therefore all friendship outside the gate. Secondly you must be clear in your interaction and never take emotions of friendship in work place. Your friend exploited your friendship because you allowed it. Had you put your foot down the very first day nothing would have happened.

Further every company has a system called MIS and information through reliable sources. Though you must have worked very hard

"I sleep vigilantly like a dog thinking about my work load whole night.

I get up in the morning like a horse, I go to work running like a deer

I work all the day like a donkey

I run around for 11 months like a bull without any holiday.

I wag my tail in front of all my bosses

I play with my children like a monkey if I get time.

I am like a rabbit before my wife" etc etc

Your ethics or basic traits of a good employee were shapeless and that's the reason you were not absorbed.

Any way nothing is lost. Be professional and you will scale mountains.

Hope my 25 years of experience will help you shape in to a fit HR.

All the best !!

Dear Friend,

Indian Labour Laws keeps ensures that justice is done to employees, no employer exploit or try to exploit them. There is no such law which stops any employer to do welfare of employees.

If in your previous organisation the rule was followed that dont cut the salary of the employees who are not getting good salary is good thing and i appreciate this.

Being rules are to be followed strictly without any discrimination, if welfare is done it should be done to all. While doing that you wont become so loyal that you discriminate someone of welfare just beceause he is your friend. He is employee first and just a employee in the establishment premises. So the same thing should apply as applied to other employees.

Regarding loyality i should say it should be there always either it is one month assosiation or one year or ten year. Loyality can't vary as per the tenure or situations.

Your records are confidential so its no point of telling that no one have access to that, always remember that your records are very very important that only your Departmental Head or Plant Head can see. Many time situation will arise when seniours from other department will try to interfere and see the confidential documents of your department just be blunt with them without coming in any pressure of their seniority or anything. If you think that there is only one Personnel Manager in your company you are wrong that there are so many people who try to act as a personnel manager i think u understand what i want to say :D

In last i will say dont think too much, what u did was right , what u r doing is right and what u will do in future will be right just see all employees as employees and follow the rules with emphasis on humanatarian approach, no one is ur friend best friend or anything all are employees just employees and you should treat all same.

hi dear ,

What u did for company XYZ while u were in ur internship was totally justified by what u always studied in ur course and also what u mite have read in leave policy books for any organizations.

But when it comes to managing organizations expecially managing Human resources of an Orgn. Then u tend to be lenient.

See i will just tell u a thing. I mean I may be wrong but it does happens. When u have 2 frns in a same company but at different levels then the person at lower level always tries to take undue advantage of second one and the person at higher levels feels that the next one is trying to take my advantage (even if at times when he is not taking it ). So this should be very clear .

U mentained ur friendship that's offcourse good .

Now when u relate ur case with ur org ( a typical plant culture ) gives u that much authourity to let apprentice , search on for a good job while there apprentice period. Or else if u r plannng to hire him permanently then u can be strict . else what u did is justified

Hi,
Since you mentioned that your boss also was not in favor of cutting salary, you could ask your friend to ensure that work assigned to him is completed in time and then he can take leave.
If he exceed his quota of leaves but completes work assigned to him, it is still ok in the situation in which all of you were working.
When in doubt, try to view your decision from your Manager's point of view and your friend's point of view. It should provide guidance as to what is right from wrong.

Dear Friend,

Any company has its own rules regarding appointment of app and their wages. There are govt regulations on these appointments too. Let us now analyse as to why these apps are taken in by the Company and how the employees are teated, paid and trained there. I believe the Govt rule says how many apes can be appointed by each company/which departments/ how their work should be evaluated/ How they should be trained/ and one day a week they should be attending the classes at RE centre, where they should even report about the attitude of the Company. By this way, the Govt has ensured that the apps are properly looked after. The compensation for the apps are fixed by Govt.

If any officer in the company feels that the compensation package is not enough for the apps, the matter should be taken up and discussed with the top management. Govt do not interfere with you paying any additional compensation to the apps., except that you cannot claim it from the Board.

Let us look it at the right way. In theory, the employers spends time, money and energy (by way of theoretical and practical training, evaluation, retraining, loss or damage to the machinery parts due to the unskilled way of handling the same by apps etc. etc. ).

What do the apps get, A thorough and practical training for an year, which makes them ready to get a job in the market. A good income is guaranteed to the person, who has gone through the training properly, and who has become skilled during the period of training.

I believe, it is not sympathy that is required for the apps. But, a real motivation and making them understand as to what this apprenticeship will do for them. Let them study in the hard way and struggle to the top. I am sure that we all know the story of the growth stage of the butterfly or how the nice beautifully shaped stones are formed in the rivers. It is only practical training and continuously making it thorough in the shop floor, which will help an app to reach the top. It is the duty of HR to guide them into it, motivate them to perform, evaluate/appraise them for necessary corrective actions and mould them into good employees. But, in todays world, the day they join some company as app, they think they know everything, start applying for jobs even with false or made up resumes and they become failures in their life.

When I join a company may be as an app or employee, I agree to all the terms and conditions. Immediately on joining, I find all those not suitable due to various reasons. Can we agree to that.

Let us justify each of our actions without having a bias. A stand which we can justify to our own consciousness. Let us not feel guilty later on.

Hi

I felt that many opinions have come up which spoke the subject, emotions, friendship etc. etc.

Tell me friend, How did your so called loyalty to your XYZ Co. help you develop as a HR Professional? I found that you are at the beginning of your career, trying to learn things and often in a fix when it comes to decision making. I am addressing this issue, ie YOU since this is a forum for mutual help and development.

The management hires people like you to build a culture, inculcate discipline and streamline the processes in the organization. So, to look things from the management's perspective, they are paying you to do that, so why would they do it? If they do not follow rules, you do it. What matters at the end is how true you are to self and the company. You claim that u have been loyal to them but what went wrong to change your opinion after you quit the company.

As someone had rightly pointed out, you should not talk bad about the company which taught you lot of things, that could as well be very big in the future. World is tooo small, dear friend, so think and act.

I dont intend to address the confusion u faced, but to put it forward to you, as HR Professionals, we need to understand the difference between the personal life and career. When you learn this well, you will not find yourself in a fix the next time you face this situation.

Piece of advise who had experienced this incident many times before: Be true to yourself and know where your limits as a person and an HR Practitioner.
Maintain a professional relationship with your peers and colleagues; but maintain private friends outside of the job. Know what the demands of the job and do not expect anything at all - not even a simple thank you. Keep matters very private as if life depends on it. And keep your priorities in check - do not sacrifice yourself - just for the sake of keeping a job.
Loyalty has a limit; everybody's indispensible in this job even HR. Enjoy your life.
Hope this helps you. God bless always.
