Hi Seniors, I am working in a private company. For many years, I have been accustomed to the popular national holidays. However, recently, we all came to understand through an RTI that there are no official records or government orders declaring Republic Day, Independence Day, and Gandhi Jayanti as holidays.

Clarification on National and Festival Holidays

I have come across information suggesting that private companies should provide seven holidays per year, including three national holidays and four festival holidays. Could you please clarify whether it is a violation to work on these three so-called national holidays?

Also, is it permissible for us to declare seven festival holidays specific to our state? Your guidance on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Please help.

Well, assuming 365 days and 52 Sundays, the total working days would be 313. Now, would working 313 days instead of 310 in a year make such a big difference? Apart from, of course, creating resentment and exposing the company to charges of not paying heed to days of national importance.

Observing Holidays and Work Efficiency

Most of the countries with a larger GDP than ours observe more holidays. People spending more days in the office and longer hours do not automatically translate into more work. My two cents: the energies spent in cutting out or shifting the three national holidays could be better spent in making the most of the remaining days workers come to work.
