Hi,
I would like to know how should one come to know if a resume / candidate is a real or fake resume. Many candidates pad up their cvs so nicely that one would even hire them. But I want to know how do you find out if a cv is fake. Are their any techniques to find it out?

First of all i would like to say that, we should not look at the candidate in a suspicious way by looking at his resume...coz the details what has entered could be true...and as far as i know there isn't any such tool to idntify whether its a fake or a real one...hence during the intial rounds we have to trust the candidate...later we can catch him if the details what he has enclosed turns out to be false during reference check

i would like to know what are the different levels of interviews are conducted, coz in our company, in initial rounds we check the candidates communication, his attitude towords work, and his confidence..once he is through, he will be put onto technical round, there by goes another round with Ops manager/VP/or any higher level of that project or department which the candidate will be placed.... you can even go for written aptitude test in communication/technical to know about his calibre in the initial round....

to add on to that we cannot be sure untill we do a reference check with the previous employee...or if you ppl know about the process then hecan grilled down in technical round. but untill you do a reference check you cannot be 100% sure if that person has worked for that company

today cos do a lot of backgnd verification for the same...everything from education to previous employment is being verifird...Normally this work is outsourced

Hi Sayali,
Normally in the HR round, we can make out quite accurately if the resume is fake. You need to probe on his current / last employers and ask questions like
How long you were with this co? ( dates he mentions must tally with dates on the CV)
How big was the project/sales/HR team ( depending on the position being i.w for)
What is the name of ur Reporting manager?
Where is the company located?
Normally when probe to this extent, bluffers will fumble. Also, you can pretend/claim to know one of the Senior Management guys in the company the guy is working for /claiming to work for. You need to chck his confidence level, u can make a good guess seeing his reaction.
For an accurate reference chk, you may need to call his references and confirm.

In my experience many BPO's do not give accurate information because the employee has quit the organization. I have even come across Process managers refusing to give the date of leaving.
In such cases its best to collect information like copy of form 16 submitted to IT this will prove as legal proof of employment verification. or a no due certificate if relieving letter is delayed on purpose.
Also check the designation of the references provided, If the reference details provided are people in very high posts like director or a gazetted officers they would not lie as they would maintain documentation in the form of attested photocopies. This increases the changes of a genuine candidate from being penalised by previous employers.

Hi Sayali:
Unfortunately there is no such provision of law or any such forum in our country capable of blacklisting someone who is caught making wrong claims, except that we can drop him and take a lesson. So, the best way is to be cautious and try to figure out the truth (as Deepa says) through probing. Basically it's a game and the person on higher confidence level wins. I think you must stick to Deepa's advice and stay confident during the interview process. But you have to play it safe so as you don't lose a genuine prospective employee.

Call up the candidate. Shoot a million questions about the things mentioned in the resume, ask for genuine certificates and check the telephone numbers on the internet to call and verify, ask tricky questions which he can answer only if he has genuinely taken up a particular course or a job. Ask the person to meet you as well.
