Dear Harsh,

A store manager should:

a) be capable to categorise the store items on class A, B and C based on ABC analysis
b) have understanding of various KPIs related to his job.
c) be able to implement concept of 5S in his store
d) be aware of fire and safety rules of stores
e) be able to avoid pilferage of inventory items
f) be able to study the past consumption data and should be able to define safety stock, maximum stock, reorder level etc.
g) be able to handle stores efficiently by using various stores equipment
h) be aware of indexing and labelling procedure
g) be thorough with software used in the stores
h) be able to give insight to management on holding of obsolete items.

Hope the above points are sufficient.

I handle the training programme on Purchase and Inventory Management. My forthcoming workshop is scheduled at Mumbai on 23 Oct 2010. You can click here to read its details. In the module on Inventory management, stores management is one of the topics. Do you wish to outsource interviewing of this post to me? You can do so by obtaining the permission from your management.

Thanks,
