Dear All,
Kindly note, it takes some more time to issue a notification. This is because an increase in the wage ceiling limit amounts to an amendment of a particular section of the act, which needs to be tabled in parliament. After going through the process of being passed in both houses of parliament, this amendment needs to be ultimately signed by the president. Therefore, it should take another minimum of three months to get the notification, and the effective date can be retrospective.
Kind regards,

Dear R.P,
May be you are right as per your statement. However, it is one-sided. E.S.I is the better option for employees who receive a very low salary.
I have a real-life example from last month where ESI provided a Rs 3,50,000/- cheque to an employee for his treatment. His contribution was significantly less compared to this amount. I believe this demonstrates the effectiveness of ESIC.
Regarding point no. 3, I would like to tell you that the utilization of E.S.I facilities depends on the nature of an employee's service. In the facility industry, 87% of employees utilize it.
Finally, it's fortunate for you and your family that you have not needed to use it. I hope you understand.

The Union Minister has approved to enhance the wage ceiling from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000 per month for coverage of employees under the ESI Scheme. It is appreciable. However, the limit of employees from 10 should be decreased to 5. Many organizations have 10 employees, but they do not show in the register. I have been working as an Accountant in a private firm since 1986. I am getting Rs. 9600 per month as salary. No ESI or EPF facility is being provided. What is the social security for me? No labor inspector comes to our GB Road Machinery Market.

Dear all,
Our blog is now abuzz with the news that ESIC has hiked the wage ceiling limit for coverage to 15,000 from 10,000. However, we should be aware of the following facts: The board of the corporation, in its recent meeting, recommended the above hike. This recommendation needs to be ratified by the central cabinet under rule 50 of the ESI Act. Only then can this change be implemented.
In the past, the central government has frequently either postponed or deferred decisions on proposals related to the ceiling hike submitted by the corporation. Therefore, until the cabinet reviews and approves the proposal, we should refrain from making any immediate decisions. Once approved, a formal notification will be released and widely communicated in the media.
In such a scenario, the tentative date from which the new rule could potentially be implemented would be April 1, 2010, as this marks the beginning of a new contribution period.
Thank you.

ESI Corporation enhances wage ceiling to Rs. 15,000/-
The ESI Corporation of which Director-General(DG) is Dr. C. S. Kedar has approved to enhance wage ceiling from Rs. 10,000/- per month to Rs.15,000/- per month for coverage of employees under ESI Scheme in its 149th Meeting held in Delhi on February 19, 2010 under the chairmanship of Mallikarjun Kharge Indian Minister for Labour and Employment. Harish Rawat Indian Minister of State for Labour & Employment and Vice Chairman, ESIC was also present in the meeting. Keeping in view the increase in cost of living index and recommendations of the parliamentary standing committee on labour, the Corporation increased the wage ceiling limit for coverage of the employees under the ESI scheme. This will help the Corporation to provide social security net to more and more employees of the organized sector. The Corporation also decided to enhance the benefit rates for permanent disablement and dependents' benefit for those beneficiaries who are on the rolls of ESIC for getting life long benefits under these two types of benefits. These benefits entitle the beneficiaries to get a monthly amount for whole life in case of disablement and Death. This has been done to compensate the beneficiaries against erosion in the real value of these monthly benefits due to inflation. In the meeting, ESI Corporation had also approved revised estimates of ESIC for current financial year and Budget Estimates for the year 2010-2011. An Amnesty scheme was also approved by the Corporation for withdrawal of criminal cases filed against insured people and employers under Section 84, 85 and 85-A of ESI Act, 1948 and settlement of cases filed by the employers under 75 of the ESI Act. Provisions of primary and secondary medical care services in areas/districts where the existing ESI Hospitals are more than 25 Kms away and population of insured people is more than 25000 in the areas, was also by the Corporation in Friday's meeting. It may be stated here that Dr. Kedar is a 1979 batch officer from Karnataka cadre & before becoming DG, ESIC was Joint Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat
