Dear Friends,
I have been regularly reading articles posted on this site - rather informative articles. I need some guidance from you guys. I have been working for an IT company as part of the Administrative Unit for the last 3 years, wherein I have handled HR-related functionalities too. I am really looking for an opportunity to place myself in an HR Department. Any comments, anyone!!
Thank you.

Hi Zenobia_a,
First of all, you need to understand what HR is. There are three approaches to it, i.e., Recruitment, Compensation Management, and Training & Development. Recruitment is target-driven, but you get paid well. Compensation management is very monotonous, and training & development opportunities are few. You have to choose the field that matches your administrative experience (though HR is a very specialized field). The last piece of advice would be "ALWAYS STICK TO YOUR CORE COMPETENCY."
Since you work for a software unit, 60% of your work would be automated. In HR, most things are manual. Decide what is best for you. Don't jump into anything. Think on it. 😊
What do you say?

Dear Vishal,
Thanks for the reply and the word of advice.
I do understand that jumping from one field to another is not a correct approach towards
building one’s career. I also understand that it wont be easy to shift with out having any on paper experience.
Vishal, though i m not a core HR person Academically, I have been handling various HR functionalities - from recruitments to organizing training and seminars. I have been assisting my HR unit on various project specific requirements(though again nothing on papers). Now I wish be a part of HR - Management.
It would be a great help if u could guide me on how to go abt it. Also if you could provide me details on RECURITMENT & COMPENSATION MGT....
Awaiting your response!!
Once again, Thanks a lot!!

Hi Zenobia,
FIRST OF ALL, SORRY FOR THE DELAYED REPLY 🙃 🙃
EXCUSE ME FOR THAT...
Dear [name], my suggestion would be if you want to move into HR, then choose the most happening thing - recruitment. The reason is, you get good growth and exposure. The job is very challenging but target-driven. Secondly, there is solid attrition in the recruitment industry as demand is high. You should always work in an industry with a high attrition rate. It helps you to become strong financially and grow at a rapid rate. Whereas, compensation management is a stable job. Not many people leave that profile as it has deadlines but no targets. You just have to make salary slips, coordinate with the finance department for salaries, leaves, etc., and solve employee problems with special reference to salary. If you are interested in that, you can move into PROGEON (Infosys company); they are looking for people for international clients. Even Fidelity has those openings, but there is absolutely 0% challenge.
Note: This is my personal opinion; others might differ. Try consulting others on the issue as well.
ANY CLARIFICATIONS??? I WILL TRY TO SORT THEM OUT...

Hi Zenobia,
It would be a great help if you could guide me on how to go about it. Also, if you could provide me details on RECRUITMENT & COMPENSATION MANAGEMENT.
I have seen your post and believe that you may be the best person for your HR department at the moment.
If there is a vacancy in your company's HR department, apply immediately. Type a resume and submit it to the HR head. I know it will work wonders, and you will be considered a serious candidate for the position.
In case you feel there is no scope in the HR department of your company, ensure you have a good working knowledge of the HR functions in the organization. Buy a Gary Dessler book and read thoroughly. Try to relate everything to actual working conditions.
Then, apply for a junior/middle position in HR at a different company. Chances are you will be selected based on the experience and knowledge you have.
Over the longer period, you can pursue a Part-Time MBA or a Diploma course in HR.
As for Recruitment and Compensation:
The major functions are:
- Develop, implement, and evaluate compensation and recruitment programs and services.
- Provide leadership to ensure successful delivery of programs and services through subordinate staff.
- Establish operating and capital budgets and control expenditures.
- Hire, discipline, develop, and terminate staff.
- Conduct annual performance evaluations of staff.
The major challenges are:
- Develop and implement services where little precedence exists.
- Provide ongoing services without proper payroll and information systems.
- Provide services in a unionized setting.
- Design, implement, and maintain the Aboriginal Employment Plan.
- Standardize compensation packages.
- Develop policies in the assigned areas of responsibility.
- Develop a Classification Strategy considering the needs and financial constraints of the organization and bargained classifications.
- Manage extreme time pressures to develop strategies and programs impacting heavily on the organization.
- Work with Information Systems to develop and implement HR Information Systems and Software.
- Motivate human resources staff faced with heavy workloads and tight timelines.
- Provide comprehensive corporate recruitment, employment, compensation, and benefit plan programs and services.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate policies, programs, and services.
- Hire, evaluate, develop, discipline, and terminate staff.
- Develop policies and procedures for employment, recruitment, and compensation.
- Ensure programs and services meet the needs of the organization.
- Plan programs and services within budgetary constraints.
- Provide direction and development of staff to ensure program delivery.
- Work with Information Systems to develop and implement HR Information Systems and Software.

Dear Ajmal,
Nice to hear from you.
"If you have a vacancy in your company's HR Department, apply immediately." Long back, I had spoken regarding this, but was told that there are no such openings. They do not seem to be in favor of internal shifting.
"To apply for a junior/middle position in HR of a different company" - Ajmal, I am open to any kind of opening in HR, but these kinds of openings do not seem to be published in papers or on sites. How do I find out about such openings? I have posted my resume to some consultants. Can you provide me with the names, addresses, or website addresses of consultants who deal only with HR-related jobs (I am based in Pune)?
I am planning to do a part-time HR course soon. Thanks for all your help and guidance!!

Hi Vishal,
No apologies, please! You can email me at your convenience. Thank you for your suggestion. I am interested in recruitments myself. Do I need any technical knowledge to enter the field of recruitments? I have noticed many job openings for "Technical Recruiters." What does that entail? Could you please explain it to me in detail?
Regarding Compensation Management, if someone enters that field, are there opportunities to transition into recruitment at a later stage?
Thank you for the job information. Please keep me updated on this.

As of now, I don't have any information on openings in the HR department, but you can try reaching out to some consultants. Vishal has posted an XLS file on the following link containing the phone numbers and addresses of many consultants. Download it and see if it might be helpful.
