Understanding Perceptual Errors

To elucidate further, one of the most common perceptual errors is drawing conclusions based on 'first impressions'. The physical looks, the dress sense, the name, the communication style, etc., trigger in us a variety of thoughts, all of which go into creating this first impression. For example, "He has long hair and a beard, so he must not be very serious in his work," or "He must be the bookish/scholarly type."

Another type of mistake is letting our past experiences have an overwhelming bearing on our future perception. For instance, "Students of XYZ B School have an attitude problem, so we must avoid campus interviews there."

A variant of this is letting individual experiences become the empirical data for generalizations. For example, "I didn't enjoy the food at an Italian specialty restaurant, so all Italian food is bad."
