While campus hiring, one should pay attention to the academic calendar (generally it is April/May to ~March/April).
Identify Target Skills and Subjects
1) List out the subjects/domains/specific skills you are targeting to hire (for example: Nanotechnology, Polymer Science, Laser Welding, and so on). Good companies used to approach 2 to 3 semesters before the final examination and block the students. Colleges have policies that once a student has been selected by one company, they cannot apply to others.
Engage with Colleges
2) List out the colleges having the above subjects, send your detailed inquiry (brief phone call followed by a detailed email) to the placement officer stating your intention to hire "N" quantity of interns with specific skill sets, along with a brief introduction of your company and an indication of the facilities/remuneration being offered. I strongly suggest visiting each of the shortlisted colleges to see their facilities, infrastructure, labs, excellence centers, incubation labs, etc., and randomly meet some faculty members to experience the college environment.
Attracting Top Students
2a) Remember, you are targeting cream/toppers; to attract them, create a good company presentation and a one-page summary/poster that the placement officer may put on the notice board.
2b) Get an appointment with the placement officer and visit the college for a brief presentation with target students.
2c) Carry some product examples (if available) or explain using a presentation about your company, career path, benefits (like free meals, pick-up and drop, health benefits, soft loans for higher education, etc.), remuneration (indicative breakdown of stipend/salary after completing probation, any bonuses), company culture, etc.
Plan the Campus Interview
3) Make a detailed plan for the campus interview and share it with the placement officer. For example:
i) Detailed Technical Test (60 min) | 9 AM to 10 AM
ii) Shortlisting based on the test + some weightage based on their projects/marks to date (obtain students' marks info and CVs in advance from the placement officer) | 10 AM to 10:30 AM
iii) Group discussion/One-to-one discussion | 10:30 AM to 12 Noon
iv) You can announce the results soon after or review internally and send the final selected student list. Don't forget to include backup persons in case someone drops your offer. Consider some risk factors (e.g., if you hire 4 persons, but after a month, 1 or 2 interns leave the company) and have a backup plan.
v) Send the LOI (Letter of Intent) through the placement officer and get consent.
Additional Engagement Strategies
i) Provide a theme for advanced research or during the remaining semesters
ii) Offer special allowances
iii) Invite them randomly for a week or a day to the office.
Note: Some good universities have an online method of campus hiring where they may send you a registration link for filling in all relevant information. Target students will be automatically alerted, and if interested, they will apply or show interest.
Tip: Avoid consultants and establish direct contact with students through the placement officer.
