Hi,

Congratulations...

Your responsibilities may vary based on the manpower size, nature of business, and business location. The big difference would be the change in management style. In a traditional PSU, HR manager can expect assistance from a couple of clerks, steno/secretary, and junior management personnel. When you shift to an MNC private establishment, you need to change your mindset (if you are preoccupied with a 'sitting duck' management style) and there will be a significant demand for proactiveness. For example, in a PSU, attrition is not a critical issue, and the HR manager is not going to be appraised based on the attrition chart. If you are a person with high levels of energy, a positive attitude for learning, and continuous improvement, you can really enjoy your new assignment. Best of luck.

1. Get inputs on corporate HR plan, strategies, and policies from your investors.

2. Get approval for the Annual budget for the HR department, management systems, training, etc. (the board may ask you to submit a plan; then you need to have a thorough understanding of all aspects of the department—you can request two weeks' time).

3. Based on the budget, you need to plan your activities; also, there will be questions like, "Should I hire 1/2 HR folks, or should I manage the entire HR department activities with the help of an integrated HRIS," etc.

4. The HR head would be responsible for certain forms and returns regarding employee laws (national as well as local) (get everything verified by legal experts) and keep track of these returns (high priority).

5. Employee bonds and agreements (get everything verified by legal experts).

6. Prepare a list of tasks (annual as well as quarterly) and schedule tasks.

7. Learn the existing HR processes, identify non-value-adding elements, and suggest HR process streamlining and automation.

8. Maintain a good relationship with all employees, try to learn the employee satisfaction levels, and develop channels for informal employee information.

9. Evaluate yourself on a weekly basis against the accomplishment of your tasks (you can use MS Projects).
