How is HRA Defined in Salary?
In India, HRA is not compulsory except in two or three states where there is an Act that makes the employer liable to pay HRA to employees under certain conditions. HRA is defined based on the Basic Salary component, a certain percentage of it. There is no specific law that mandates the payment of HRA as stated by our learned member Khaja Vali. Additionally, there is no law that specifies the exact percentage of Basic Salary, whether it should be 40% or 60% of CTC.

As per your query, the HRA component in salary is required or not can be decided based on the following criteria:
1. To provide the opportunity for Income Tax Exemption under Section 10.
2. The company has not provided its premises to accommodate employees.
3. Employees have made their own arrangements for accommodation.
In view of the above, the HRA can be fixed at 50% of Basics (if in a Metro) and 40% if in another city.

1) HRA is defined as half of your basic salary, which is 50% of the basic salary.
2) Basic salary will be 30% of the fixed pay.
3) HRA cannot be claimed against company-paid accommodation.
4) Rental agreement or rent receipt copies have to be submitted after the declaration is complete.
5) Some organizations will collect proofs manually, and some will opt for online uploads.
