We are a small software company in Pune with orders for web application development for desktop and mobiles.

We look for front-end as well as back-end web designing. However, we are finding it difficult to attract candidates even though we have tie-ups and recruitment partnerships. This is because we are a small company and offer slightly lower salaries compared to what larger companies provide.

I have noticed that some other small companies manage to recruit decent candidates even though they have similar circumstances. Does anyone have any ideas on what we should do?

Hello Pallavi,

You can directly tie up with the private designing schools from Pune location. You will get good front-end developers from them. I would suggest going with Explora Designing School; it's a good school to find skilled front-end developers and designers. You can also set up a placement workshop for the same with different private schools.

If you are in Pune, you should try the institute like we did, Technnovation Labs. Search it on the internet. We tied up with them for recruitment. We thought they'd be sending us candidates in a week or something, but within 2 days, they had sent us candidates and we picked one of them. The freshers don't mind small companies, at least that's what I got from them.

Ya, try that.

We had tried Technnovation when I was in my first job. You just have to allow them to put your logo and name on their website. They have both fresher and experienced employees, if I'm not mistaken.

Hi,

Firstly, you have to check how the compensation is pegged in comparison to big companies as well as comparable companies. If there is a distinct difference, you have to bring the salary closer so that it's competitive in the market.

Secondly, what is the plan for increments? Do you have a solid appraisal or progression process in place?

Even if you hire people at lower salaries, the chances are that you might attract individuals who have been rejected by other companies. Another aspect to consider is that even if you are able to hire, you may end up losing them as your company could just become a platform for them to kick-start their careers.

Therefore, you need to consider both hiring and retention perspectives.

Hello Pallavi,

In fact, this problem is often faced by companies that are not renowned in their respective industry. My suggestion would be to hire a good HR consultancy company that first understands your requirements and is able to present the open position to prospective employees with more clarity in terms of the company's existence, future prospects, working environment, and the right job description. We have found that in most cases where there is a communication gap with candidates in the initial stages, finding the right candidates has been very difficult. If you are willing to hire freshers, then a walk-in interview would be a good option.

Hi Pallavi,

Try to find out how many schools/institutions are there that are imparting the desired knowledge. Then, talk to their heads and the concerned department lecturers; they will guide you to people who are capable of doing the work. After that, you can discuss the pay package with them. You can inform them that your company is hiring not out of desperation but to provide an opportunity for freshers to gain experience. This approach will attract individuals who genuinely aspire to build a career, and you will find suitable candidates. Visit the institutions in person to observe the individuals and the projects they are involved in or have undertaken. To ensure their capabilities, you can request them to demonstrate their work. I hope this advice gives you some direction on how to proceed.
