Hello seniors, I have 2 years of experience as an HR officer in an engineering and manufacturing organization with an employee strength of 2500. I resigned due to marriage. Despite my good experience in HR, recruitment, skill gradation, and knowledge of laws (DLL), as well as welfare activities, the lack of fluency in English leads to unemployment in a city like Mumbai. I come from a rural background and worked in Satara city, so I have had no exposure to English speaking.

Is Fluency in English Everything?

Do attitude, positivity, past experience, dedication, and commitment towards work not hold any value? Please guide me on this problem.

Suggestions for Enhancing HR Career Opportunities

Try enrolling in English-speaking courses. I have no idea about the costs, but you don't need to go for anything expensive. Also, look at jobs in the manufacturing sector where Industrial Relations (IR) would form part of your HR responsibilities. Since you have knowledge of labor laws, that would be a great advantage, along with your strong language skills. Look at companies based in Navi Mumbai & Thane—they would be more willing to accept your skill sets as they are.

I am also coming from a poor background. For the past three years, I have been working in the leading automobile industry. Being stuck in English does not matter; it is just communication, not rocket science. HR means he is the only person managing everything. If you are stuck, it may reduce your administrative skills.

Key Points to Remember

- Keep the willpower in your mind.
- Don't be afraid of interviews; it is not your last one.
- Whether it is right or wrong, believe in yourself.
- We are HR, not just employees.

Regularly watch English films, read Hindu (newspaper), and talk freely with your friends. These are a few ways to improve HR skills.

All the best for your growth.

Many people from non-city locations, especially those with backgrounds in industrial relations and labor law, are facing similar problems. It appears that they have more interaction with local government authorities in the local language. However, looking at the other side of the coin, rejection or non-selection due to poor English communication does not diminish the value of your attitude, positivity, past experience, dedication, and commitment to work.

Importance of Language in Communication

Language is a crucial part of communication, completing the entire process. In the corporate world, English is the common language used for most communications. It is essential to learn as we often need to communicate with internal employees or external clients. Therefore, we should be familiar with the English language and strive to improve it.

Global Perspectives on Language

A significant aspect is that in India, the English language is given more importance. In countries like China and Japan, among many others, they have adopted their own languages for all communication, including corporate work. This is why many people learn their languages before visiting these countries. They do not feel bad about poor English communication; instead, they are now also learning English.

Changing Perspectives on Language Learning

We should consider English from a different perspective—it is just a language that can be learned like any other. No one should feel guilty if they cannot speak Hindi or a regional language but can speak English. Rather than feeling bad, they should take pride in being fluent in English.

So, do not feel discouraged. Take positive steps towards learning and facing the situation without fear.

Similar views like yours have been expressed by a number of people in the past as well. Please search in Cite HR. Type "Improving English" inside the box that reads WHAT DO YOU NEED. You can find this box right above in the title bar. After typing, press "research." You will get plenty of reading material. You can also refer to the articles in DOWNLOAD THREAD and RELATED INFORMATION that you would find alongside these postings. It is good that you have other positive behavioral aspects. Improving your English would reinforce your stature. So please start working straight away. You will see the difference after a year or even earlier. Wish you good luck.

I understand the situation you are facing, and it is a difficult and challenging one. It can seem overwhelming mentally. My recommendation is to take the "advice" you get on this site with a grain of salt. Just read some of the suggestions above—they themselves do not know how to write correct English and are urging you, in effect, to ignore your need for improvement in this area. Frankly, the majority of the folks who have advised you above do not have a clue or exposure beyond India—it is obvious from the language (English) they use.

Importance of English in HR

In your area, HR, the English language is a critical component for understanding and interpreting discrimination laws, company policies, their application, and then relaying that interpretation back to your team members in clear, lucid terms. The HR field is about communication and effectiveness, not efficiency. It is about problem-solving, not task-doing.

I recommend some English comprehension classes, and then "How to be a trainer" courses, including Facilitation and Presentation skills.

Professional Background

For the record, I recently came to India after spending the last 25 years in the US, where I was a Sr. Ops Mgr with FedEx Corp. I worked with a broad range of industries and companies, including Caterpillar, Mitsubishi, Lockheed Martin, Anheuser-Busch, Disney, and the US Air Force. I've been in India for the last couple of years doing Organizational Development for some US-based MNCs.

Try not to be too hard on yourself, for everyone has to learn at her or his own pace. It's okay to make mistakes—for they make you stronger.

Warm Wishes,

Deep

The Importance of English in Career Growth

English is not a superior language, but it is a business language. A person with extraordinary domain knowledge and poor language skills has to work hard, and it hardly impacts their career growth. The same person with moderate domain expertise and good language skills can lead a team with progress. In India itself, there are 18 official regional languages. English can be learned within a couple of months to read, write, speak, and listen with proper training and guidance. It is not a "Manthra," but a "manthra for success." All the very best in acquiring the skill.

I am also from a rural background, and I am doing an MSW in HRM. We also study labor laws. The same thing happened to me; I was tense all the time because of my poor English. But believe me, if you try to overcome this problem, one day you will master English fluency. Don't be afraid of English; let's face it.

Relax, looking at your present situation, I would suggest you practice mock interviews at home, considering the questions that are most common in an interview in general. This will give the employer the impression that even though you are not perfect, you have a working knowledge of English and can handle professional situations competently. The mock practice will help boost your confidence. In an interview, you will have to handle impromptu questions skillfully and answer them confidently in Hindi. Once you get an HR job, you can hone your English speaking skills.

Best of luck

I wish I had perfect content for you. For now, I would seriously suggest reading conversations in English. One site that really helped me improve my English is [WritersCafe.org](http://www.writerscafe.org/).

On this site, please visit the following link to see some live conversations in progress: [Live Feed | WritersCafe.org | The Online Writing Community](http://www.writerscafe.org/live)

This is basically a free site where members share their poetry and prose. Most conversations are about a poem or a piece of prose that someone has posted. This site is a very good way to study "spoken English" even though it's actually written (as in typed and posted). While conversing, most people on this site write as they speak. You'll also get good exposure to global English as this site has members from all over the world.

Read and read and read till you feel confident. Then you can review poems and stories and maybe even write some of your own.

It's a fun way to learn without any pressure. :)

Sincerely,

Regards

The Importance of English Speaking Skills in a Professional Career

The fact is, good English speaking skills are a must for a professional career. Sure, hard work, talent, teamwork, the ability to learn, etc., have tremendous value—but their value is realized only when you speak good English. In today's connected world, English is the de facto language of all business activity, and you just fall out of the flow if you do not speak English.

Obviously, there are solutions, and there are people who overcome this weakness by their determination and hard work. You will have to figure out a method that would work for you, but there is no running away from it.

And yes, it is a practical skill that you will acquire through practice. Reading English or listening to English will not help you speak English. You will have to practice speaking to actually speak English.

Remember that Hindi medium professionals are not weaker than English language professionals. Remove the feeling that English is tough to speak. To eliminate the fear of English, you should consider contacting a psychologist as well as enrolling in coaching programs that provide training. Remember, grammar in English is secondary to the knowledge of subjects. Be brave enough to speak gradually with pauses.

Overcoming Language Barriers in Professional Settings

Dear friends, remember that Hindi medium professionals are not weaker than English language professionals. Remove the feeling that English is tough to speak. To overcome the fear of English, you should consider contacting a psychologist or enrolling in coaching programs that provide language training. Remember, grammar in English is secondary to the knowledge of subjects and the courage to speak gradually with pauses.

I disagree with the notion that contacting a psychologist is necessary to overcome the fear of English or that speaking slowly with pauses is a sufficient substitute for language proficiency. Ignoring your language barriers is not the solution.

This lack of exposure is precisely what I'm referring to. The quality of advice provided on this site is shockingly inadequate. The aim of this platform is transformation, yet the experts here seem to approach it in a transactional manner without understanding the true essence of transformation.

Rupali, I respectfully disagree as a professional working globally. Learning English, expressing oneself effectively, and exploring different cultures by traveling are essential steps. It is not as challenging as it may seem, and financial constraints should not be a hindrance. Many bright and talented individuals, including myself, have overcome similar obstacles through hard work and determination.

English should not be viewed as a limitation but rather as a challenge to conquer. As Richard Bach famously said, "Argue for your limitations, and sure enough... they're yours."

Deep
