Dear Friends, I have completed my MBA in HR through correspondence. Since it was part-time, I did not gain exposure to core HR activities. Apart from that, I have work experience in recruitment. Now, I am trying to transition from recruitment to other areas, specifically core HR activities. However, I have limited knowledge in core HR activities, and I do not wish to join HR Practical Trainings as I believe it is a waste of time and money. Please suggest what I should do to gain comprehensive knowledge and exposure to core HR activities.

For that, you should refer to many HR-related books, as well as explore various blogs and sites where you can learn and discover new things. If you have any queries, they will be addressed once you post them in the discussion. You will even receive expert advice.

The best way to gain practical knowledge in any field is to work in that field. Therefore, try to secure an HR generalist profile in an organization at the earliest opportunity. Additionally, it is important to update your knowledge by reading relevant books, labor laws, and blogs as Mr. Jeevaratnam suggested. This will help you connect theory with practice.

When you work in the field, the field will teach you the lessons that you have to learn and the skills that are required to tackle issues case by case. In the meantime, please go through the Labor Acts such as the Industrial Dispute Act, Contract Labor Act, PF Act, Factories Act, Minimum Wages Act, and Payment of Wages Act. Browse through case laws and try to get a real picture of workers working in small and medium-sized enterprises, apart from discussing with HR professionals.

All the best,
