Hi Friends, I have 1 year of work experience in the hospital industry as an HR Generalist. Now, I have opportunities in HR outsourcing consultancies for Payroll Executive positions. I am confused about whether taking this opportunity will affect my career growth in the future. Please help me decide.

- Recruitment (5%)
- Payroll processing (majority)
- Statutory compliance (majority)
- Full and Final Settlement
- Joining and Exit formalities

CTC: 15-17K/month

I am interested in building my career in the payroll area.

Career Growth in HR: Payroll vs. HR Generalist

Take my advice, just a payroll job will not give you growth. You will just become a data entry operator working on SAP, entering the income taxes, leave records, etc. It's better for you to be in the HR Generalist job and try to learn new verticals in Admin, Accounts, which are supplementary to HR functions.

Hi, I would prefer the payroll job opportunity as you would have a new learning curve since you are already experienced in a Generalist role. Once you are proficient in payroll and confident, you can definitely transition back to a generalist profile.

In short, it all depends on your requirements, preferences, and ultimate goals. There's nothing wrong with moving to a different field as it also offers great growth opportunities, and you are not too old to change your career path. First, define and set your career goals and preferences, then assess whether they are being fulfilled or not before making a decision. However, the role being offered presents significant career growth potential, but it's advisable to conduct some research before reaching a conclusion.

I agree with Ravi's advice that being in the HR Generalist role, you should try to learn new verticals in Admin and Accounts, which are supplementary to HR functions. Otherwise, you may end up as a data entry operator.

My suggestion is that you stick with your generalist profile. I am suggesting this because I have faced the same problem. At the beginning of my career, I worked as an HR generalist. After that, I joined a payroll outsourcing company. Then I realized that my old profile was very beneficial for my career growth. Now, I have joined another company as a Senior HR Executive, and I am enjoying my work.

I believe that payroll is a part of the HR profile. Currently, you are handling recruitment, performance management, and payroll. Consultancy jobs are typically target-based. Therefore, I think you should consider transitioning into a generalist role.
