Hi,

Today, I visited a bank where a fresher was appointed to sell credit cards. She has been given a target of at least 2 credit cards to be sold. If she cannot sell 2, she should aim for at least one. If throughout the entire month she is unable to reach the target or sell even one credit card, she will be terminated from the job. Is it fair to terminate her if she was not able to sell even one credit card?

Hi Meena,

Please let us know whether this is an off-roll job (on 3rd party roll) or on the company roll. Normally, when a company appoints freshers for the marketing/sales function, new recruits will be under a probationary period or honeymoon period for about 3 to 6 months. The purpose of this is to train them and develop them into better sales personnel for the company.

In my opinion, expecting immediate results from a fresher in sales is not fair. The company should provide the necessary training before setting targets. After the training, they can certainly expect business growth.

Even though the sales target for her is very low, the company has to train her effectively to achieve it.

Dear Meena,

Demanding jobs are good for those who want to grow on that highway. Stay focused on what builds your capabilities. Not every role is meant for everyone. However, as we tread our way into careers, we learn something valuable.

This job has allowed me to understand how a demanding role pushes your limits. There are highs to performing and achieving targets. Even the best performers have failed at some point in time.

The coping skill of seeing how each little learning takes you ahead is the primary goal. Every skill can be learned; mastering it takes time. If you want to continue in the same vertical, consider spending time until you master them or move on.

Whichever way you choose, do congratulate yourself for trying out something so challenging. Wishing you all the best!

Dear Meena,

There is nothing like right or wrong in this. It entirely depends on the company to set standards for the executives joining them. From my experience, I can say they never fire a fresher for non-performance if they are convinced that the person is putting in efforts. Now, it is the job of the person to work sincerely and report regularly to their superior, so that the superior is convinced that this employee is serious. In the sales line, these kinds of threats are always there to create pressure on freshers so that they perform. Some managers prefer hand-holding and pampering in the initial days, while some believe in creating pressure. Just learn to live with it for some time. Things will fall into place. There is nothing right or wrong morally here.

Hi all viewers,

This has happened to me as well. I was playing an administrative role, and I don't think my performance was bad or that anything went wrong. So, what made them remove me from the company?

Another person who was in the HR role did not perform well either and was also let go from the company. I feel that people who don't give good performance will be removed as the company cannot bear the loss.

Dear Meena,

What I can make out from your communication is that you are probably just beginning your career. These are initial teething problems we normally face. Sometimes as a fresher, we don't understand how to behave or handle situations, thereby causing irritation to our superiors. Sometimes, even when you are completely correct, you may have an unreasonable boss who takes action against you to save his own skin. Another reason is if the overall revenue of the company is dropping, they start cost-cutting. The first thing they do is let go of junior-most executives. Even companies like Infosys, ICICI, and Wipro have done that at some point in time, so there's no need to feel bad. Just try to cope with it. If you are a sincere and honest worker, doors will open for you. Just be cautious about one thing – is there any unintentional negativity you are communicating during work?

Meena,

I am not able to get a clear understanding of your problem. First, because you are not specifying your locus standi in this matter, and you are also not stating why it's your problem. Second, you are using SMS lingo which makes reading difficult.

The employee has been asked to sell 2 cards a month. She is given a minimum of 1 credit card a month! Below that, she will be terminated. If an employee cannot sell even 1 item of a low-end job, why will the company keep and pay her salary? Even for a fresher, selling a credit card is not rocket science. It's a question of persevering through a database and speaking to as many people as possible, then following up rigorously until they say yes or no.
