I'm pursuing my final year MBA (HR) and need to undergo a project. I got the opportunity to do a project based on the Recruitment & Selection process at Firstsource Solutions (the topic was given by them). However, my staff is not happy with the topic as it is a common HR topic. Kindly suggest a few topics that are not common and are based on the recruitment and selection process to satisfy both the organization and college.

Don't be disheartened by this. Almost all projects receive negative feedback from some place or another. It is not advisable to change the topic in the middle. Hence, try to complete the project with maximum emphasis on research, questionnaires, and interpreting the results. May I know on which topic you are conducting research?

I haven't started my research yet. I need to start it from January 2nd. However, before that, I need to get the title confirmation from my college. Yesterday (15/12/12), I had to confirm my project title with my staff, but they were not happy with the topic (a study on the effectiveness of recruitment and selection at Firstsource Solutions). They feel it is a common topic, and they are expecting some new topics. However, my problem is that the organization wants me to do my project on recruitment and selection.

So it would be of great help if you could suggest me a topic based on recruitment and selection process , which is not a common one, so that i can satisfy both the organisation and my college.

Well, here are some ideas that I hope can be useful:

1. Using Web-Based HRIS and social networks for recruitment and selection.

2. Use of psychometric testing in the screening and selection process.

Types of Advertisement Techniques

3. Types of advertisement techniques and interfaces to attract a certain caliber to the job in mind and screen applicants through the way they applied to the ad.

Well Daisy, your topic is just "a study on the effectiveness of recruitment and selection at Firstsource Solutions." You can consider a more specific topic as suggested by Rana Swidan. A topic should be specific; yours is rather generic and may lead to further research.

For Instance: Types of Advertisement Techniques & Interfaces

If you choose "types of advertisement techniques & interfaces," you would need to assess the current advertisement techniques used at Firstsource Solutions. Next, compare these techniques and their responses. Subsequently, identify a new advertising technique and recommend Firstsource try it on a trial basis to assess its effectiveness. Compare the results with the old techniques and draw a suitable conclusion. Finally, demonstrate how your survey project was beneficial to Firstsource, such as whether it helped save money on ads and attract more candidates. This process involves extensive research, surveys, data tabulation, and comparisons.

Dear Daisy,

Pardon me for my frank assessment. This problem arises on account of two issues. First, the student not doing the homework properly and coming up with a title too soon. Second, the college guide being pedantic and not guiding/questioning the student enough.

The Funnel Approach in Research Methodology

The topic given to you is quite broad, and the organization you have chosen is quite varied in its activities (I gathered that by searching the web). You must have studied Research Methodology as a subject. If so, you would have come across "The Funnel Approach" to narrow down to a specific problem (from a broad topic) for investigation. Did you question your mentor at First Source Solutions about their problem that needs a solution through a study? If you had done so, you would have been able to come up with a title that would have satisfied both the organization and the tutor.

The abstract at Emerald | Employee Relations | People management issues in Indian KPOs and a paper at http://www.peoplesuniversity.edu.in/...ue.pdf#page=69 may give you some more ideas.

No, sir, I didn’t question them about their problem. I understand that was the mistake I made. I’ll make sure I meet my external guide in the organization and discuss. Thank you, sir; your reply was helpful for me.

Regards
