Hi, I had just joined a company as an HR executive. Although the company is old, they never had an established HR department. Now, they want me to set it up. How should I go about it? Please email me at shilpi.c87@gmail.com. Please reply.

Hi,
The first step is to analyze the company and its old policies, if any, and then begin preparing new policies based on the vision and mission of the company. This includes establishing policies related to timing, leave, discipline, culture, and so on. For more details, please use the research option.

Yes, I agree. The first step to establish an HR Department is to draft an HR Policy for the company. Start from small things that are important, like an Application letter, Offer letter, Employee files, etc., and slowly, after getting to know the company, proceed to draft the HR Policy. Make sure everyone is aware of the HR Department and communicate to everyone that very soon new HR policies will be introduced in the company so that they don't get surprised at the end. Many companies are reluctant to change at first, but slowly, if you explain the benefits of change to them, they tend to change and adapt. Last but not least, don't try to dominate employees but only communicate in a professional manner. Best of luck.

Most companies have 12 holidays in a calendar year. Make a list of those holidays and have it signed by the MD of the company, then circulate it to colleagues.
We have 8 casual leaves, 6 sick leaves, and 15 earned leaves in a year.
Casual leaves require prior notification of at least 3 days before applying for leave. They cannot be combined with other holidays or leaves. Permission from the team leader and informing HR is necessary. Casual leaves cannot be carried forward to the next year; they must be utilized within the current year.
Sick leaves require notification at least 1 hour before the start of the shift. Taking more than 3 sick days in a row requires a doctor's certificate to be sent to HR. Permission must be obtained from the team leader or manager, and HR should be informed. Sick leaves also cannot be carried forward to the next year.
Earned leaves, which are allocated after completing one year of service, can be carried forward to the next year if not utilized. A maximum of 5 days can be taken at a time, with 7 days' prior notification to the team leader and HR.
Maternity leave allows female employees 3 months off for up to 2 childbirths, with 1 month before the expected date and 2 months after delivery. A gynecologist's certificate is required before applying for leave. In case of a miscarriage, an additional 15 days of leave can be provided.
Paternity leave permits male employees 2 weeks off when expecting a child, with 1 week before the expected delivery date and 1 week after. A gynecologist's certificate and the child's birth certificate must be provided during the leave. In the case of a miscarriage, an additional week of leave is granted.
Compensatory Off is granted to employees working on holidays or Sundays. A 3-day notice and approval are required, and the compensatory off should be utilized within 3 months.
