Understanding Reverse FMEA

Our management is requesting that we do one reverse FMEA a month. Can anyone please explain what that is? They didn't provide any training or give any explanations!

Difference Between FMEA and Reverse FMEA

Also, what is the difference between an FMEA and a reverse FMEA? We produce machined parts for transmission in the automotive industry. Any assistance on the definition and steps on how to would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Understanding FMEA and Reverse FMEA

FMEA stands for Failure Mode Effect Analysis. For example, the snapping of a brake wire in a two-wheeler can lead to an accident. The snapping of the brake wire is a failure mode causing the effect of an accident. Now, you analyze what will be the severity of this failure mode, what is the probability of occurrence, and whether this failure mode can be detected. Based on your analysis, you take preventive actions, such as designing a high-strength, rust-free, rod-like brake wire, etc.

Reverse FMEA Explained

Reverse FMEA is the reverse of the whole process. For example, you are taking a shower and burn your skin. The failure modes can be an electric shock, malfunctioning of the thermostat, malfunctioning of the water mixing knob, etc. Now, you take preventive actions to eliminate the possibility of electric shock, thermostat malfunctioning, etc.

So, it is basically what it states, which explains why I couldn't find anything about it anywhere online! Are there no specific steps needed to be followed? Thank you for your input—I appreciate it!
