Hi everybody,

I am a summer trainee working on a summer project about competency mapping in my company. I have been tasked with creating a competency model for the first four levels within the organization, particularly focusing on the Associate Consultant, Consultant, Senior Consultant, and Consultant levels. I understand that I need to identify the various competencies required for an IT professional at each of these levels to develop a competency model based on them. However, I find this topic quite confusing, and I am unsure how to proceed.

If you could provide me with some information on this matter, I would greatly appreciate it. If you already have identified competencies for an IT professional, please share them with me along with a sample competency model for an individual working at any level.

Hi,

Can I recommend that you have a look at the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA), the UK standard for IT professional skills? It was set up in 1999 and is now on its 3rd release. It has about 500 organizations using it in the UK - some very large, some quite small.

You can download SFIA from www.sfia.org.uk for no charge. You can also browse through the competencies at www.sfia3.com.

In addition to effectively being the IT professional standard in the UK, SFIA is now being adopted elsewhere (increasingly in the US) and has been translated into Japanese.
