It depends on the nature of the industry you are trying to execute. In my experience, I feel for a service/hospitality industry, the method is 360 degrees, and for others, it could be a balanced scorecard or any other customized method of traditional and modern systems (like MBO, ranking, incidental, etc.). It purely depends on the nature of the industry and the type of job you are trying to apply for.

In my opinion, the best method is the 360-degree method with some modifications to suit your organizational requirements. This may be applicable to almost all the posts and industry types. However, using the stock method would not give you the kind of result that a modified/adopted method specially customized for your requirements and matching your business processes can provide.
So, the basic idea would be to pick up the 360-degree performance appraisal system and then work out modifications that suit your business processes.
